Monsters & Treasure offers something like 80 monster types to play with, but it doesn't end there, oh no. A plethora of additional monsters were subsequently published by TSR in many sources. By my counting of various lists, there are at least 339 "offical" TSR monsters for OD&D on the loose. This count includes monsters encountered in Greyhawk and Blackmoor, but not those specific to other campaign settings such as Mysteria, Hyboria, Cthulu, Carcossa, EPT and so on. An enthusiastic referee might like to test his players with some of the less well known enemy, so I've summarised their key features here so you can give them a try. I've excluded unique individuals such as Demogorgon, Orcus, Tiamat, Bahamut, Humbabus and all the Gods and Godlike beings given in Gods, Demigods & Heroes. I've also skipped any monsters that may have appeared in City of the Gods (DA3), Duchy of Ten (DA4) and Polyhedron mag, since I don't have them. Otherwise, the sources used are: M&M (Men & Magic) M&T (Monsters & Treasure) SR (The Strategic Review) GH (Greyhawk) BM (Blackmoor) EW (Eldritch Wizardry) GD&H (Gods, Demigods & Heroes) TD (The Dragon) The 270-odd monsters summarised below are too long for a single ProBoards post, so I've had to break them up into three... Well done waysoftheearth, what a wonderful resource and an incredible piece of work, thank you. Worth an Exalt for the wow factor alone.

I think we are going to break the Exalt button. Nice work.
-Mike
PS - No what you want it in is CSV or excel because then you can do interesting sorts on it, like by HD. Plus you can easily copy and paste from most spreadsheets to most word processors. That's what I ended up doing when I was mucking with the Monster list for Delver's Quest ruleset I'm tinkering with.

Wholly Crap! That must have taken a good long while to put together. Exalt again! No worries on the DA series monsters as they are BECMI era creations by David Ritchie. You might consider adding the Garbage Pits of Despair monsters (maggot men, watchwings, carcus critters) from Dave Arneson, but that's your call. On a quick glance through there seem to be a number of flesh and blood creatures from GD&H I don't see in the list (The Elric creatures for ex). Not sure if that was deliberate or not.

Very nice!
I compared with my notes, and here are some changes/additions I would make (largely just my own preferences, but you might appreciate the feedback):
Aerial Servant (GH p. 31) Demon, Type VI —> Move to its own entry as "Balrog" Demon, Succubi —> Move to its own entry as "Succubi" Denebian Slime Devil (SR #7 p. 15) Dragon, Chromatic —> I would prefer it to be included Dragon, Platinum —> I would prefer it to be included Dragon Turtle (U&WA p. 34) Clay Golem —> Move to "Golem, Clay" Hobbit (GH pp. 5 & 68) Magic Statue (M&T p. 21 / Tegel Manor / Ready Ref Sheets p. 20*) Neo-otyugh (Lost Caverns of Tsojconth) Spectres —> "Spectres (Nazgûl)" Troglodyte (Lost Caverns of Tsojconth) Water Weird (Lost Caverns of Tsojconth)
* - I know this is a “TSR” list, but the Magic Statue IS attested to in M&T, and the Ready Ref Sheets is so common and awesome, it’s practically OD&D canon to me.

Great job! You might want to add a couple aquatic monsters from Underworld & Wilderness Adventures (dragon turtle, giant leech, giant sea snake, giant fish.)

Another Exalt here! Incredibly useful! ;D
I agree with Falconer regarding the Thoul - a beast I've had great fun throwing at over-confident players now and again!
The old Dungeoneer fanzine had a few nice ones as well, though I appreciate that doesn't count as "official." (The Harvestman's a particular favourite - hear the screams when one of them turns up..!)

Wow! Thanks for all the positive feedback guys. @aldaron; I don't have The Garbage Pits of Despair. Could you elaborate on those DA monsters? FYI -- I purposefully excluded the Melniboneans from GD&H as "campaign specific". Falconer; Thanks for the notes What is the Ready Ref Sheet? I don't think I have that either. Do you know whether the Thoul was ever published by TSR (in an adventure module, perhaps)? talysman; I did notice those monsters mentioned in U&WA, but (form memory) I don't think game statistics are given. I'll work through the suggestions and add any TSR OD&D extras I find. I will update this post, and also create a spreadsheet for everyone to download. Thanks again all ;D

What is the Ready Ref Sheet? I don't think I have that either. Oh crap! Go buy it now! Do you know whether the Thoul was ever published by TSR (in an adventure module, perhaps)? Thouls are mentioned in OD&D, just never given published stats. Someone asked Gary what their stats are, and he posted them online from his notes back in the day. (Actually, they were also given official stats in B/X, but once you start going there for stats you’re opening a whole different can of worms.) I did notice those monsters mentioned in U&WA, but (form memory) I don't think game statistics are given. Here is the info for the Dragon Turtle per the Ready Ref Sheets (not sure where they got it all, but it looks right): Monster: Dragon Turtle Source: U&WA p34, 1974 Number Appearing: 1 AC: 2 Movement: 3/9 Hit Dice: 11 to 13 % in Lair: 60% Treasure Type: H Alignment: N Special Abilities: bite/3-30, breathe steam/3x9" cone, move rate is land/water (no fly), lift ships on back

@aldaron; FYI -- I purposefully excluded the Melniboneans from GD&H as "campaign specific". Hmmm. I dunno, I'd feel comfortable using a lot of them in any campaign, as I have done with astral wolves and snow serpents from the Nehwonian deities writeup (Legend and Lore). One of the cool things about those is most players never heard of 'em <shrug> I don't have The Garbage Pits of Despair. Could you elaborate on those DA monsters? Since these first appeared in Different Worlds in the '80's it doesn't really fit the OD&D criterion you were going by, but on the other hand GPoD isn't standard to any D&D except Dave Arneson D&D <shrug> I will post them for your amusement if nothing else. Note: Carcus Criter is fairly close to Carrion Crawler, and may be Dave's (original?) version. Carcus Critters Move: 105 feet/turn Alignment: neutral Hit Dice: 4 + 2 hit points Attacks: 2 suckers Armor Class: 6 Treasure Type: C Damage: Paralysis and Life Level drain No. Appearing 1-3 XP Value 125 This large scavenger is about 6’ long and 4’ high with six legs. Although capable of hanging from a wall, it cannot climb higher than the rear pair of legs. Its mouth is toothless and can only absorb pre-digested or very soft material. Its favorite foods are the various slimes, jellies, and puddings found in the dungeons. A sucker will do one to four points of damage when it grasps a target. When a successful attack is made with a sucker, the target must roll vs. paralysis. A victim will be slowly reduced to a lifeless pulp at a rate of one level per turn per sucker. Once all the victim’s life levels are gone, the victim will be absorbed through the creature’s mouth. Rather than seek live prey, the carcus critter prefers something that is already dead or of a soft consistency. Upon release, the paralysis will wear off in one turn. The victim must make a saving throw vs. poison. The poison is very low level and it will take several days to die. The victim will lose one level a day while infected. These levels can be regained by a Healing spell or through the natural healing process. These creatures are generally found where there is a supply of creatures suitable to its taste. One great advantage that carcus critters have is a natural immunity to the poisons and acids extruded by the various slime, jellies, and puddings that it enjoys eating. This immunity does not extend to the same poisons and acids used by men and other creatures.

Maggot Men
Armor Class 4 Hit Dice 2+1 Move 90' (30") Attacks: 1 claw or 1 weapon Damage: 1-6 + disease or weapon No. Appearing: 1-20 Treasure Type: A Alignment: Neutral XP Value: 25
Maggot men have the body of a maggot with the head and appendages of a man. They are found armed (75% of the time) with spears (30%), swords (25%) or daggers b(45%). Maggot men live in deep holes where large amounts of garbage and other organic refuse can be found. Out of every ten maggot men, one is a leader. Except for their leaders, other maggot men are 1 hit dice and save as Level 1 fighters. One out of every thirty maggot men will be a chieftain of maximum size. These 'chiefs' will be found only in the main underground lair of the maggot men. In this lair there will be fifty to threee hundred maggot men. Carcus critters are often kept as 'pets' by maggot men. whenever possible, maggot men will prefer to drag off dead creatures of attack obviously wounded creatures. In this respect they are very siumilar to chouls. A live healthy creature will only be attacked when the odds are about six to one in favor of the maggot men. The maggot men are not very intelligent and as a result they are not very good at counting. When killed, a maggot men will return a zombie type unless their bodies are burned. Maggot men will shun fire. Whenver fire is encountered, maggot men must make a saving throw vs. spell. This is why they will not burn their own dead. They do not like zombies and will drag them back for food at every oppportunity.
I will do Watchwings tomorrow.

Oh yeah, there is also the BM Temple of the Frog monsters:
These two should definetly be in any collection of OD&D monsters
Frogmen No. Appearing 30-300 % Lair 40 Move: 30 feet/turn or 150' Swimming Hit Dice: 1 Attacks: 1 Armor Class: 7 Damage: 1 -6 or by weapon Treasure Type: A Alignment: Neutral
The frogmen are a warm-blooded, intelligent, upright, bipedal, species, with fully articulated hands and opposable thumbs. But they also have gills, webbed hands and feet, thick, mottled green skins, bulging eyes, exceptionally muscular legs, and long, sticky forked tongues. Like frogs, they lay eggs. Though they dwell on land, the frogmen are equally at home in the water, and can stay submerged for no more than 4-6 hours. They must however soak at least once a day in water. For every 24 hours a frogmen is kept from soaking for at least 2 hours they will loose 1d6 hp permanently. These can be restored by soakings lasting double the normal time. Frogmen prefer to fight with nets and tridents.
Killer Frogs
Number Appearing 50-1200 Move: 90 feet hopping (10’) on land hop/turn 120 feet swimming Treasure Type: nil Attacks: 1 bite or claws Hit Dice: ½ (3 h.p.) Damage: 1-6 Armor Class: 8
These aggressive carnivorous amphibians grow to almost two feet in length and come equipped with razor sharp teeth and talons to attack and rend their prey. They often attack in swarms, hoping onto their victims and latching tight with tooth and claw. When underwater they are immune to gases and cloud based attacks. They typically live in large colonies in cool swamps or caves and fight at double values for 2-12 rounds when their eggs are threatened.
Note: I edited these two descriptions from the material in BM (mostly) the stats are accurate.

Great list, waysoftheearth.
Monster and Treasure Assortment, Set 1 (1977) has an OD&D version of the Carnivorous Ape.
Not a full description, but does have a stat block: "(1) HP: 18, #AT: 3, AL: 6; ST/F4-6; SA: If 2nd and 3rd attacks score, the ape does 1-8 points additional damage (rending)." The "AL" stat represents the score for the monster to hit AC9 (highest in OD&D), and the saves F4-6 is also an OD&D bracket changed in AD&D.
Comparing with your list, the M&TA 1 also gives us OD&D versions of Large, Huge and Giant Spiders; and Giant Poisonous Snake and Giant Snake (non-poisonous, I guess).

Okay last of the GPoD monsters (not counting Sophie the Dragon)
Watchwings
Armor Class 7 Hit Dice 1/3 (1 to 2 hit points) Move: 20' (10') on ground 200' (65') flying Attacks: 1 rake (talons) Damage: 1 point No. Appearing 4-24 (in wild) Save As: Normal Man Morale: 8 Treasure Type: nil Alignment: Neutral XP Value: 2
These large grey-colored birds are noted for their terrific eyesight. They have small sharp beaks but it is their sharp talons that are their main weapon. Their sharp talons are quite capable of piercing leather armor and are used to seize small rodents in the wild for food. Watchwings fly much like hawks and favor a diving form of attack. Like eagles they can seemingly float in the air while observing the ground below for any movement. When they spot movement, a trained watchwing will return to its trainer and indicate direction of the intruder. When so ordered, a watchwing will go and hover over the area where the intruder is located. They will also attack any intruder when ordered to do so by their trainer. When a trainer has telepathic abilities, he can also 'talk' with the watchwings and receive fairly detailed descriptions of the intruders. Should their trainer bi killed or lost, the watchwings will revert to being 'wild'. When 'wild', watchwings will guard their territory closely. They will cover a range of up to a mile and a half from their nest/aviary. They will attack by swooping down on the attackers but should an intruder touch a nest/aviary, the watchwings will instantly attack until either they or the intruder are dead. Watchwings can see up to ten miles and only a will camouflaged non-moving intruder can avoid their gaze. Watchwings have very poor night vision and will only rarely fly after dark - and then only for short distances. The watchwing' favorite home is in the mountains or near the fringes of plains and deserts. Watchwings can only be trained when they are hatched in captivity. Attempts to breed them in captivity have not proven to be too successful.

Okay folks, here are some of the additions suggested. I'll need some help with a few final details before I can finish it though. @aldaron; Thanks for the Dave Arneson monsters; I think they should go in purely out of respect. Do you have a year for GPoD? Or page numbers for the monsters therein? Falconer; There are no monster stats given for "Hobbits" in GH that I can see, nor for Magic Statues in M&T. I don't have Tegal Manor or the Ready Ref Sheets, but if you want to provide the stats line and the reference I'll add them (since they are mentioned in M&T). Falconer; I don't have Lost Caverns of Tsojconth either. Can you provide details (including source) for the three critters you mentioned? @aldaron; I've added Frogmen and Killer Frogs, and I see them mentioned in BM, but I can't find their stats. Do you have a page number for them? @zenopus; I don't have the Monster and Treasure Assortment. Can you please provide stats for the monsters you mentioned? GPoD, Different Worlds, July/Aug 1986, Watchwings p. M6 Maggot Men pp M6-M7 Carcus Critters p. M7 Killer Frog - Blackmore P.45 Frog Men - Well, it is a good thing you asked me about this. I now realize that the "Frogmen" entry I gave you (put together a good while back) was mostly copied from the DA series. In the original they are also called "Frog People" Stats were also somewhat different in the original (it says "stats identical to Mermen") ToTF so I have edited the entry to fix it. This too however, comes from BM page 45. Some details in the descriptive text still folow the DA ToTF (for color) so the page reference there is 14. I also see that I originally gave killer frogs a damage of 1-6 +2 and I'm not sure where that came from (MM maybe?), the entry on page 45 mentions no such thing so I'm sure that the originals were just 1-6. Please fix the frogmen entry when you can.
