Some statistical breakdowns of how infantry and cavalry fair when charging various sorts of archers. The ratios assume my revised point values, of course, medium and heavy horse would do a lot better under the CM suggested values:
Light Horse [4 points each] (30") 78" (three moves)
Medium Horse [8 points each] (24") 78" (four moves)
Heavy Horse [12 points each] (18") 78" (six moves)
Light Foot [1 point] (12"/15") [27"]
Medium Foot [2 points] (9"/12") [21"][30"]
Heavy Foot (6"/9") [3 points] [15"][21"][27"]
versus foot bows (15")
Light Horse 1 Move (start up to 15" away) [1] 1:1 [12 cavalry versus 12 archers] (4 per 12?)
Medium Horse 1 Move (start up to 9" away) [1] 1:2 [12 cavalry versus 24 archers] (2 per 12?)
Heavy Horse 1 Move (start up to 3" away) [1] 1:3 [12 cavalry versus 36 archers] (1 per 9)
Light Foot 2 Moves (start up to 12" away) [3] 4:1 [48 infantry versus 12 archers]
Medium Foot 2 Moves (start up to 6" away) [3] 4:2 [24 infantry versus 12 archers]
Heavy Foot 3 Moves (start up to 6" away [5] 4:3 [16 infantry versus 12 archers] (6)
versus crossbows/horse bows (18")
Light Horse 1 Move (start up to 12" away) [1] 4:4 or 2:1 (8 per 12)
Medium Horse 1 Move (start up to 6" away) [1] 4:8 or 2:2 (4 per 12)
Heavy Horse 2 Moves (start up to 12" away) [3] 4:12 or 2:3 (2 per 9)
Light Foot 2 Moves (start up to 9" away) [3] 4:1 or 8:1
Medium Foot 2 Moves (start up to 3" away) [3] 4:2 or 8:2
Heavy Foot 3 Moves (start up to 3" away) [5] 4:3 or 8:3
versus long bows/composite bows (21")
Light Horse 1 Move (start up to 9" away) [1] 5:4 or 6:4 [12 cavalry versus 8 archers] (6 per 12)
Medium Horse 1 Move (start up to 3" away) [1] 5:8 or 6:8 [12 cavalry versus 16 archers] (3 per 12)
Heavy Horse 2 Moves (start up to 9" away) [3] 5:12 or 6:12 [12 cavalry versus 24 archers] (2 per 12)
Light Foot 2 Moves (start up to 6" away) [3] 5:1 or 6:1 [72 infantry versus 12 archers]
Medium Foot 3 Moves (start up to 9" away) [4-5] 5:2 or 6:2 [36 infantry versus 12 archers]
Heavy Foot 4 Moves (start up to 6" away) [7] 5:3 or 6:3 [24 infantry versus 12 archers]
versus heavy crossbows (24")
Light Horse 1 Move (start up to 6" away) [1]
Medium Horse 2 Moves (start up to 18" away) [1]
Heavy Horse 2 Moves (start up to 6" away) [1]
Light Foot 2 Moves (start up to 3" away) [1]
Medium Foot 3 Moves (start up to 6" away) [2]
Heavy Foot 4 Moves (start up to 3" away) [2]
In general when directly assaulting archers, infantry and cavalry units should only make the first move when they have either lost the initiative or are otherwise scheduled to go second, otherwise they run the risk of a counter-move giving the archers an extra volley (and the point is to minimise the number of volleys).
When using the simultaneous movement system it is possible that in some cases the number of volleys will be reduced by one when facing archers, as it is not clear if they can shoot twice in the missile phase when they have remained stationary but not shot in the movement phase.
A suggestion for using light horse archers more efficiently occurred to me today as well. Their high movement rate means that they could potentially ride in column around the enemy left flank and deliver a turn of shooting without response while the enemy turns around. Needs plenty of room to be successful, but would be a pretty way to put their high point cost to good use!
