The Dwarves Norin and Burmon, Sili and Hepti, and the Men Soval and Beranger, Arbenbard, Nat Pickthorn, and Eremin Sulk, as well as the Half Elves Legandir and Elendir are here.
Hepti has a lit torch, Soval has a lit lantern, and the first beacon burns steadily behind the company in the passage way.

Sili and Norin lead the way further east into the mines, following the rule-straight track running down the middle of the broad passage way.
Soon they pass under a second beacon -- a dark bulk hanging from the ceiling above them -- and completely out of the illumination case by the first beacon. Now only Hepti's torch and Soval's lantern light the way forward...
Only a dozen more paces ahead the Dwarves see closed doors facing one another; both to the left and to the right of the passage. The main route continues unabated into the dark...
What now?

Legandir decides a Dwarfs eye is better than an Elfs in this dungeon, and follows the two stunties at ten paces, bow ready.

Sili gestures Norin closer with the light, and, from a safe distance, studies the two doors for markings, signs of recent use, or other noteworthy details.

Arbenbard is attentive to the passage details, particularly the floor & ceiling -- construction, ornamentation, etc.

Soval moves the lantern where he may to help his companions see, keeping his sword ready and his ears to the darkness at their rear. He is content to move forward and face whatever challenges may yet come...
(OOC: Wow have I been busy - apologies.)

Sili gestures Norin closer with the light, and, from a safe distance, studies the two doors for markings, signs of recent use, or other noteworthy details. Sili leads Hepti closer, with his torch, and Norin is right by his side. The doors are tall (for a Dwarf) being almost 10ft in height. There are great stone frames standing out a foot from the wall, and these are broadest at the ground, then tapper somewhat toward the top of the door, so that they are 8ft wide at the ground, and 6ft wide at the top of the door. The doors themselves are of ancient timbers, bound with stout iron workings that were once themselves works of great fashion, but are now rusted, bent and buckled out of shape. The doors, both of them, look to have been beaten down many years ago. There is a very old body wedged between the left door and its frame, so that the door is 1ft ajar.

Arbenbard is attentive to the passage details, particularly the floor & ceiling -- construction, ornamentation, etc. Arbenbard meanwhile, studies the passage, the floor and the ceiling for anything of note... He is every impressed by the craftsmanship of the Dwarves, for the passage is remarkably straight and true. But for the steel track running down the centre, and the equally spaced beacons hanging from above, he has not seen anything to remark upon.

Now from behind the company comes an awful clatter -- as if a pile of old helmets and shields were being tossed about. Then comes the whining squeal of protesting metal, and a deep trundling rattle.
This continues for a half a minute, until at last Eohild and Barald emerge from the Troll Den behind, pushing a mining cart ahead of them.
There is more frightful noise until at last they have the cart set upon the track.
The deep silence returns.

Eohild, Barald, and the Elves Lomeluin and Telthalion, and the Hobbits Largo and Baraglin (now with a torch) have returned to the main passage with a mine cart.

Norin stares incredulously at the latecomers pushing the Trolley of Wandering Monster Check +1.
"You're not thinking about pushing that blighter along with us, are you? We should at least consider oiling the wheels, if you are..."

"You'd think vey want to call the blighters out, and 'ave done wif 'em all at once," Eremin Sulk muses to himself.
Then he looks around, in case they ARE coming out...

We should at least consider oiling the wheels, if you are..." Lómëluin looks ruefully at Norin and Eremin. "The Lady was insistent," he offers up with a sigh. Turning back to Eohild; "Our comrades speak wisdom, Lady. If you cannot quieten that thing, leave it here. That noise will be the death of us." He scans the waiting darkness with his Elvish eyes, hoping no harm has already been done...

Sili hears all the racket from behind him. Figuring any chance of surprise is spoiled, he shrugs and attempts to open the partially-ajar left door.

Lómëluin gratefully leaves the clamorous mining cart behind him and moves up to provide Sili with supporting fire should it be needed. He gestures for Telthalion to accompany him.

What do you all think Maybe not!", considers Eohild. " Barald my good man please use some of our oil and apply to the wheels. Use your dagger to drip and then drip it on", commands Lady Eohild.

Arbenbard: "Lady Eohild, stay this nonsense lest you be labeled a dunce. A door is opened and warriors gather to investigate. Prepare yourself for battle -- let the cold steel in your hands do the thinking rather than the shriveled walnut within your head."

Lómëluin slips quietly away from the argument and takes position behind Sili, hoping the shadows are enough to conceal the smile tugging at his usually grim lips from the fair Lady of Rohan's notice...

"Hear now, Arbenbard, 'tis no way to speak to a lady." Soval moves to Eohild's side, seeing if she can make her contraption work or if she might need help exiting it. He keeps at the ready in the meantime, in the event that battle is joined.

Up the back of the group Eohild and her Man, Barald, fuss over oiling the squeaky axles of the mine-cart. It requires a good deal of oil, and no small amount of rocking the cart to and fro, which in itself creates some noise.
Those nearby pique their own opinions about the good sense of this course, or otherwise, and what constitutes good manners....

Anxious eyes keep watch on the passages afore and behind, while Sili the Dwarf moves closer to the door on the left hand side of the passage so that he might peer within, while Lomeluin the Elf stands vigilant nearby, an arrow ready on his bowstring.
[1d6]
As Sili comes within a pace of the door near he notes -- with some satisfaction -- a row of different flags upon the dusty floor right before the pair of doors. With another step he would have put his boot upon these stones, but he pauses not a moment too soon.
While the main passage has been paved with great, smooth 3ft square flags evenly arrayed, right here before the doors there seem to be a single row of 9in square flags neatly spanning the width of the passage in a single row...

Meanwhile, up back, Barald has worked perhaps half a flask of oil into the mine cart's axles. It does seem to have eased the grotesque squealing somewhat... but that is not to say the cart is even remotely quiet. It still rattles and rumbles like an empty mine cart.

I hope our efforts will be rewarded. We can move it with us, once we are sure the ahead is clear", says Lady Éohild.

"Hold a moment," Lómëluin says quietly, stepping forward; "Perhaps our friend here can tell us a tale..."
He kneels down to examine the corpse in the doorway, although he is careful to avoid the flagstones Sili located and tries to avoid being framed in the doorway as a target.
Can he tell anything about the body, and in particular, how it met its end?

Lomeluin carefully steps over the flags indicated by Sili, and moves closer to examine the body in the ruined doorway.
Upon nearer inspection it was apparently an Orc. It must have been slain some years ago, for the flesh is horribly withered and dried. It wore a carapace of crude mail over leather, and these are punctured right through the chest by a great hole, some 3" wide. Whatever weapon laid this wound is nowhere to be seen.
Interestingly, the edge of the gaping wound is not flared as it might be if something burst out of its chest. Rather, it looks more as though something were pushed through the corpse, from front to back. But it lies now flat upon its back...

Meanwhile, at the mine cart end of the passage, Eremin is keeping a nervous ear out for any noise that might not be made by the company. The Heavens know they are making enough of their own.
What is that? A flap of foot upon stone, perhaps? The distant echo of a pebble clinking upon a stair? Or just some unknowable movement in the deep? No... that is a more regular shunk of foot falls surely?
Eremin has a bad feeling knotting in the pit of his gut, and his hand goes without thought to the hilt of his Hollander made short sword as he strains to hear what is going on in the dark. Curse these loud mouthed fighting Men, anyone would think they were calling for order among a busy meeting of the Shire Councillors in the Great Hall of Bree!

Surprise is rolled [1d6=5].
Eremin and the pair of Hobbits see them coming in time, but everyone else is busily engaged.
The swift, dark shadows lope up from the shadowy passage behind the company. There is a suddenly clatter as rough blades are freed from sheaths, and the creak of wood and sinew as bows are bent. Most of all there comes the pounding of feet and a hungry hissing and laughter as they come.
It's the Orcs! Lots of them.
What does Eremin intend? Everyone else (excepting Baraglin Banks and Largo Harfoot) at the west end of the passage is surprised. Those at the east end of the passage are unaware anything is afoot.
