As seen in the "Sci Fi" section, I'm thinking about Flash Gordan a lot now that I'm watching the 2007 TV series. I found a pristine copy of FGU's Flash Gordon RPG after searching for it for nearly 20 years... What can anyone tell me about this game? Searching the internet gives me the impression that it's not really a RPG at all, but more like a "choose your adventure" style gamebook. I hear the artwork is nice but the actual game design is pretty cruddy. Seems like you can't find one of these for under $80 at the moment, and most of them don't seem to be in great shape. I have some credit at Noble Knight which would ease the pain somewhat, but I hate to spend that kind of money on something not worth my time. Or, if anyone has one they want to unload I'm willing to discuss a fair price...

It's not an rpg at all, you choose what action you wish to take off a list, and your stats only serve to give you more options when an event occurs, you're not allowed to do whatever you want.

The last page of Space Patrol (Michael Scott Kurtick) suggests its rules can be used in conjunction with Flash Gordon and the Warriors of Mongo in order to enhance the gameplay of the latter.

Essentially a "choose your own adventure" book, eh? A shame, since the world of Mongo would make a fun RPG setting.

Well, is it in the public domain? If so, what're you waiting for, Fin??

I'm doing some research on Flash Gordon. Honestly, I paid more attention to Buck Rogers than I ever did to Flash and it's interesting to see some of the history behind the characters. And, yeah, I may throw something together.

If I remember correctly, many of Mongo's inhabitants are just beastmen. It seems the majority could be treated as normal men with funny looking bodies, gills, what have you. Now some races like the lion men, might actually be a little tougher, and be like a 2 or 3 hit die monster, while hawkmen can fly obviously. Honestly having the major races be character types like a Dwarf is might be a really cool way to play! I guess I'll have to buy those comic strip collections now....

The description of choose your own adventure is apt. But it's pretty fun and plays in a few hours. You choose a route from the outlying regions of Mongo to the Imperial Capital. As you go, you have the chance to assemble an army ready to overthrow Ming. You need a pretty good sized army by the time you reach the final conflict. Not really an RPG, but an interesting effort to make a Flash Gordon game. I have a copy still and would part with it.
