I've been putting together a set of materials to share with some friends about how to set up a campaign, most of it articles from The Dragon, The Strategic Review, White Dwarf and Different Worlds. My operating principle has been to choose stuff I wish I had read before I started refereeing. With that in mind, some of what I've picked includes: What articles or material would YOU include? Which Issue of White Dwarf?

So, I took that Europa magazine, looked at the final page with subscribers on it and reached out to one of them on the list. Maybe he's an old pack rat, I mean, they were all gamers back in the mid 70s, enough so that they were subscribing to a tiny little hand types magazine from a guy in switzerland and getting mailed to them in the US. Maybe, I'll score gold, maybe I'll strike out. With Facebook and such these days, it's almost impossible NOT to find someone.

I wish I'd had the Matthew J. Finch OSR Primer. It would have made me a much happier DM (and probably a better one too).

I started in 1995 with 2e, and even then me and my buddies didn't have much (or even all the necessary) stuff. I wish I had stuff like The Wilderlands of High Fantasy. More than anything, I wish I had access to the kind of information that is found today for free on blogs and message boards like this one. Nothing has done as much to inform me as the blogosphere and the message boards. Without places like this, I wouldn't have even known what OD&D or Moldvay B/X were.

I don't know...
When I started, I just had the Moldvay ed. Basic set with the B2 module that came with it. That should be pretty good starting equipment by most anyone's standards, but nothing I ran back then was anything I'd be proud of today. No matter what physical material you have to start with, it doesn't matter as much as what you've got within you.

I would say I would have benefited, not from 'material' per se, but by a patient, well-read and well-gamed older player who could have walked me through an introductory explanation of the hobby, as, in the early days, there was much confusion and misunderstanding as to what a roleplaying game was. It would have been easier and infinitely less frustrating to interact with a human and not a pile of intimidating hardbacks with fine print and countless pages of daunting tables and charts.

Now that I've actually read the Gygax piece from Europa, I'm wondering if anybody has parts I and III of that same article? There is surely some very good stuff to go along with the part Victor was kind enough to bring to our attention. I'd like to bump this thread and ask if anyone has been able to track down parts I and III of the article series that the Gygax article in Europa was part II of? Surely if someone can access the Diplomacy archives to find this issue of Europa (with part II) then at least part I should be available. Just wondering . . .

Which Issue of White Dwarf? There seems to be a bit of confusion here. The Dungeon Architect by Roger Musson appeared in White Dwarf as follows: Part 1: The Interesting Dungeon Issue #25, June/July 1981 Part 2: The Constructed Dungeon Issue #26, Aug/Sept 1981 Part 3: The Populated Dungeon Issue #27, Oct/Nov 1981 The Town Planner by Paul Vernon appeared in White Dwarf as follows: Part I: Designing and Running Villages Issue #31, June/July 1982 Part II: Designing Towns and Cities Issue #32, August 1982 Part III: Running Towns and Cities Issue #33, September 1982 -- Gonyaulax

EDIT: The early White Dwarf articles about starting a campaign milieu - Lew Pulsipher maybe? - are probably the best early articles of that sort I can remember. Those might be nice. It took me a little longer to track these down, but here they are: D&D Campaigns by Lewis Pulsipher, Part 1: Philosophy, White Dwarf No. 1, June/July, 1977 D&D Campaigns by Lewis Pulsipher, Part 1: Philosophy (cont. from issue 1), White Dwarf No. 3, Oct/Nov, 1977 D&D Campaigns by Lewis Pulsipher, Part II: Mechanics, White Dwarf No. 4, Dec/Jan, 1977/8 D&D Campaigns by Lewis Pulsipher, Part III: Rules Recommendations, White Dwarf No. 5, Feb/Mar, 1978 Now to take some time and go back and actually READ this stuff . . .

I started with Moldvay/Cook Basic, which honestly was one of the best introductory RPGs of all time. But still...
Jason Cone's The Dungeon as Mythic Underworld essay.
Zak S.'s Vornheim.
Ascending AC.
Swords & Wizardry -style "One save".
And most importantly, way, way, waaaay more self-confidence.
