A woodgrain-box OD&D given to me by my friend Kayte, who went to Lake Geneva High School in the early '70's. Got it signed by Dave Arneson a number of years ago. It would be nice to get it signed by Gary at some point, as well.

My set of D&D booklets from the OCE is lacking the box in which they came in originally, thus I wondered how to store them with the according dignity they deserve. The consequence is a self made wooden case-like box. I glued in a layer of cloth and put the cover picture of the OCE box on the lid. I am happy now and liked to show you the result. img47.imageshack.us/img47/6382/odndboxdc4.jpg

Now that's a cool box! An exalt for that!
How did you get the image transferred to the lid?

That box is totally cool and not dissimilar to what I was (unsuccessfully) lobbying for WotC to release back in 2004 (30th anniversary). Remember a few years back when Hasbro released a bunch of their classic Parker Bros and Milton Bradley boardgames in "collector's editions" -- replicas of original (or at least old) artwork and components in a wooden box? I thought they should do the same thing for D&D -- reprint/facsimiles of OCE vol. 1-3 (and perhaps Chainmail and/or Supplement I), a fluff booklet on the history of the game, and a set of polyhedral dice in a wooden box. If they wanted to get really crazy they could've included a CD or DVD-ROM with pdfs of the other supplements, Swords & Spells, the Monster & Treasure Assortments and Dungeon & Outdoor Geomorphs, and the early issues of The Strategic Review and The Dragon (up to issue 20 or so). Call it a collector's edition, stick a hefty pricetag on it (the Parker Bros & MB games went for $25 IIRC, so make this $40 or $50 -- still about the same as what you'd pay for a new rpg, and less than those leatherette "deluxe edition" books some companies sell) and sell it to the nostalgia set. WotC wouldn't have made a ton of money on this, but I doubt they would've lost money on it either (especially since, at the time, legal pdfs of the original rules weren't available). Oh well, maybe they'll decide to do this in 2009 for the 35th anniversary...

How did you get the image transferred to the lid? Thanks for the Exalt, I had a transparent foil where I just printed the image-file on. Fortunately the backside of it is sticky and after sanding and pickling the box, its surface was clean enough to hold the foil properly. foster1941: This would be really nice since it's still better to have well done replica of the booklets than having the scanned pdf's only. Together with all supplements this would make a brilliant package! I wish you good luck with promoting your idea for the 35th. It is only that the guys from WotC are that excited about the 4th edition and taking their game to the internet that I doubt they would have the faintest thought in such a noble direction. But I can't tell - maybe we can flood them with requests for a true anniversary box? Okay sorry now, I am in danger of hijacking this thread... so I better just say thank you for the laud so far.

We could always play up the angle "Look how far we've come!" Maybe WOTC would go for that.

The coolest 'old school' thing I have is not OD&D (though I have the 5th ed, white box, supplements, Chainmail, Swords&Spells, etc.) would be my copy of Empire of the Petal Throne - I got the rulebook signed by MAR Barker when I met him at Worldcon in 1984.

Oh, one more interesting thing I have is the May 1974 issue of Wargamer's Digest which had an article by Gygax on D&D and is probably one of the first references (though I found a reference to a review of D&D from The Courier, but no date other than 1974). I have several other Wargamer's Digest issues that have early D&D or Chainmail stuff in them (sadly, I don't seem to have the issue with a Tekumel article). I'm thinking of scanning some of the D&D adds. Frank, any additional/specific details on these sources (issue numbers, dates, postmarks, etc., etc.) would still be be very appreciated

Ok, what I have:
V1#4 Feb 1974 p.31 TSR add for Cavaliers & Roundheads (I think this is the earliest issue I have)
V1#7 May 1974 p.24 Swords And Sorcery in Wargaming by Gary Gygax - the D&D article, reprinted in Dungeon #112
V1#8 Jun 1974 p.23 notice for Gencon VII p.33 TSR add for D&D, Tricolor, and Cavaliers and Roundheads
V2#2 Dec 1974 p.10, The Phalanx - Its Origin, Development And Deployment by Gary Gygax
V2#5 Mar 1975 p.6, The Role of the Chariot In Early Warfare by Gary Gygax p.27 Reader's Service Department has blurbs about D&D, Warriors of Mars, Tricolor, and Cavaliers and Roundheads
V2#6 Apr 1975 p.6, The Use of the Elephant in Ancient Warfare by Gary Gygax
V2#11 Sep 1975 p.15, Reader's Service Department - adds blurbs for Greyhawk, Chainmail, and Tractics
V3#1 Nov 1975 p.34 The Battle of Azanulbizar - A Tolkien Fantasy Game - description of a game run using rules based on Chainmail p.38 Combat Library review of Chainmail
V3#4 Feb 1976 p.3, full page TSR add for Strategic Review, Gencon IX, The Dungeon hobby shop, and Fight in the Skies p.19 announcement for Gencon IX p.38 Reader's Service Department - blurb on Dungeon boardgame and Empire of the Petal Throne
V3#7 May 1976 p.3, full page add for Eldritch Wizardry p.27 Reader's Service Department adds Blackmoor
V3#12 Oct 1976 p.3 full page TSR add for D&D and supplements including Gods Demigods & Heroes and Swords and Spells
I have a few later issues that I set aside with adds by other early gaming companies, but the above are all the earliest issues I have with various TSR bits. Also, two of Gary's articles were reprinted and I have those issues. I am missing a few of the early (prior to 1976) issues, so I might have missed the first appearance of something by a month or two.

My coolest is a Third Party Item, the three part OD&D Judges Screen from Judges Guild. Finally managed to snag one on Ebay after numerous failed attempts. Coolest non-OD&D (although the same era) is a copy of Metamorphosis Alpha signed by David Sutherland III.

Casey, I should have a copy too; since you're local, and we have a copier in the house, it would be easy to arrange a copy for you

Cr@p... The "Coolest Item" I mentioned is now buried somewhere in a box in a storage unit.
My wife in I just separated (long story), and she packed up a large chunk of my library and put it in storage. Unfortunately, the bookcases in the bedroom, which held the items I was currently referencing/reading, went first, and are now the most deeply buried. This includes, for example - the comb-bound, AUTOGRAPHED, rules for EPT (though I managed to rescue the rest of the box, and S&G v.1, and Gardasiyal, but none of the novels.) My copies of Men&Magic, Monsters&Treasure, Chainmail, and Swords&Sorcery. My tattered copy of the Ready Ref Sheets. Most of the 1920's catalogs (some original) and references I was using to write a 1920's price guide for Chaosium, all of my Norse mythology/history/runelore books... My CD copy of the collected Dragon magazines... All my dice...including my ORIGINAL dice from 1978...
<sigh>
I'm currently back living with my parents, and my father's library is a bit heavy on the Classical subjects - more than I could possibly need to know about Greek and Roman coinage, or the excavations in Pompei, for example. Go with the flow, I guess. I downloaded the Mazes & Minotaurs rules and signed up to write one of the Adventures.
C'est la vie

Not strictly OD&D, but I just scored a 1st edition? Dungeon game last night. Not sure how good a deal at $40, but still cool. The box printing is like this except the logo is the lizard logo shown here. The rules have no identification of 2nd printing or any such, just a 1975 copyright date. Frank
