FAQ: THE SPECIAL CARCOSA d10
What is the Carcosa special d10?
You see a picture of it, above.
And why do I need it?
Hit points in the now out-of-print Supplement V: Carcosa are determined in a different manner than in OD&D (and its subsequent versions). Player-Characters have a set number of hit dice but not a set amount of hit points. In fact, even the type of dice rolled to determine hit points changes. This is where the special d10 comes into play.
But, that does not make sense!
Well, before an encounter, the player rolls d10. The number of dice is determined as per the OD&D rules (ex: 1+1 for a first level fighting-man, 2 for second level, 3 for third, etc.) but the type of die used is determined by the roll of a d10. The larger the result on this d10, the bigger the dice used to roll hit points.
You just said I could use a d10, why do I need a special d10?
You don't. But the special d10 is cool! Plus it is easier use. Did I mention it was cool?
What are those funny symbols on the die facets?
They represent the shape of the indicated die. See how the "6" is surrounded by a square?
If Carcosa is out of print, why should I buy this special d10?
Well, you may already have a copy of Supplement V: Carcosa and whether your are refereeing or playing the special d10 is useful to you.
Carcosa is out of print in its original form, sure enough. But it isn't gone for good, James Raggi is working on updating and adapting Carcosa to his FRPG Lamentations of the Flame Princess: Weird Fantasy Role-Playing. The updated version will use the same method as the original work.
Last of all, an upcoming supplement to the retro-clone Delving Deeper will also use this variant hit point generation system (by expressed permission of both McKinney and Raggi).
