This is from "axe'n'hammer" -- I assume it's not official but I wish it was! Although I suppose we're getting pretty derailed here. Perhaps we should go back to discussing the potential Middle-earth supplement, no matter what its number might be!

Has anyone asked Rob about it?
I mean, since he's a member here and all...

You know, this just occurred to me: If I were going to run a ME campaign, I think I'd have MUs actually BE a separate race since, well, they are. And you'd probably need to hit some sort of ability requirements to play one... The paladin thing rocks! That's an intriguing thought, but what occurs to me is that maybe the Maia aren't "Magic User" class at all, but a seperate race, like elves. Since they seem to be very rare (eight of them in ME?), they probably would be npc only. So the question would be is there a MU class for "human" player characters at all... Maybe Elves are the only ones capable of such things. Just thinking out loud here.

10 Maiar that I can think of - the five Istari, Sauron, at least 3 Balrogs (Gothmog, Lungorthin and the Balrog of Moria), and Melian.
If I recall correctly the so-called "Black Numenoreans" were described as sorcerers, so it might be possible for humans to work magic. They learned their "dark arts" from Sauron though, so maybe the kind of magic that humans can do is always tainted with evil.

That's right; also, Numenoreans were told to be "Masters in Magic" even before the coming of Sauron, having acquired their arts from elves. If I recall right from The Silmarillion?

Hopefully this thread can stay on topic now, as I believe it is a potentially fascinating subject.

The Maiar were extremely powerful beings in ME, associated with the Valar themselves - servants of the gods, if you will. It would be a fatal mistake to have them as anything other than very powerful NPCs in any campaign, IMO, as they are - to all intents - divine beings themselves. Eönwë, for instance, was the herald of Manwe, and led the host of the Valar into ME to fight the War of Wrath. That's not player character material.

Just curious as to what's up with this project. Il Male hasn't posted on these boards since last May. His blog had a lot of action in February, but not so much Middle-earth since then (unless I've missed it somehow).

I haven't had contact with him since August and as far as I know no-one else has had either. He seems to have vanished from online, but then he's a uni student and his country is in turmoil so perhaps life is just keeping him away from the scene.
