I'm looking for some good hex-mapping software and can't find any threads on the topic. I'm sure there was somthing like this hereabouts at some time and I think I had downloaded some software (maybe just called "hexmapper"?), but that was a computer ago and I can't find it at the moment.
Ideally the software I'm looking for would be free or inexpensive, and certainly ease of use is a critical factor.
I'm most interested in creating fantasy terrain maps, but space maps could be neat someday, so I'd like to have the right kinds of icons ready-made. (Towers, forests, roads, etc.)
I see some of the maps that others post and think "dang, I need to be able to do those!"
Who can help?

I like Hexographer. I have the pro version and I've been really impressed with the support for this program. The learning curve isn't formidable and if you're willing to put some time into it, some really nice maps can be produced.
But even better ... even if you aren't willing to put time into it you can produce maps good enough for reference and conducting a campaign.

Kind of along the same line. Does anyone remember the old DOS program with graphics that created planets and you could drill down to surface level?
I believe it was by a company called Terralongious or something like that. They also had an Astro-mapping program. It was very 286 or 386 (think graphics before Windows 3.1).
I would love to get my hands on that software as it had that old school feel with planet maps that were like the old Traveller maps.

I would love to get my hands on that software as it had that old school feel with planet maps that were like the old Traveller maps. Not only remember it, I bought Astrologicus and Terralogicus! I didn't think the maps were all that great, to tell the truth and ended up never using either in a game. For Traveller, Heaven & Earth was/is my systemgenerator / planet mapper of choice. Was because Stuart quit developing it, is because I still use the last beta. However, Galactic 2.4 is still the workhorse for my Traveller games. As for fantasy, I'll second Hexographer. I bought the Pro version so I could use it offline. To be honest, I haven't used it very much, but I *have* used it and liked it every time I have used it. Dungeonographer, from the same place looks really good too! I might have to check it out.
