Moving to the newly cleared campsite Hiakon settled down while acknowledging the greetings of those nearby. The new campsite was near the troops and Haikon received several visits from them. There were men from both clans that thanked him for his quick response. The Onyx warriors thanked him for saving the life of their fellow clan member as well. They all assured him that they would gladly come to his aid if the occasion arose.
In the morning the majority of looks from those nearby ranged from sullen distaste to grudging acceptance. A couple of fellow travelers were more friendly and offered to share their supplies and campfire. They clearly remembered the service that Haikon had provided and they didn't seem to be threatened by his apparent advancement in status. They asked if his companion would be joining him here today.
Haikon allows that yes, his brave companion of many years (!) will be joining him. He beckoned to Karlo that he should relocate.
Karlo nodded to Haikon, and began to gather his belongings.
After Karlo joined Haikon, he was introduced to the others and shared a breakfast. There was an air of nervousness about the caravan with many furtive glances at the surrounding jungle. People that had been lackadaisical previously were up promptly and preparing for the day's march. As Karlo's belongings had already been collected, he and Haikon were soon left waiting for others. The tents were hurriedly disassembled and bundled for transport. The guards took their spaced positions on either side of the column and the caravan began moving out unusually early.
As the nearby villagers came to sell their goods and produce to the caravan, word spread of many missing local people. Morusai hi Ujjain assured them that he would address these attacks as soon as possible. He directed the village elder to send a runner to Broken Shells with word of what was happening. Runmaru hi Thrizelu urged the caravan to all possible haste so that they could reach Crossed Palms without delay. That day they made good progress.
The next few nights were uneventful and the pace of the caravan slowed back to the normal. Those that had made this journey before spoke of the town of Crossed Palms and how it's temples could allow them to give thanks to the gods for their safe passage. The sakbe road would be much safer then this steaming jungle. Though the Imperial Guards stationed at the Crossed Palms way point could not leave their post and chase through the flats looking for the Creature, they could pass the word along to the proper authorities.
Though Haikon noticed that Runmaru's courtesan often cast her eye his direction, no proper opportunity presented itself for a formal introduction. Runmaru was very possessive and kept a close eye on her at all times. Haikon, as well as most others in the forward part of the caravan, did get to enjoy her dancing and singing accompanied by the musician. Most nights after supper Runmaru would have her entertain him. All that were nearby were able to partake from their own camps.
Among those that Karlo and Haikon spoke with there was the question raised of how Runmaru could afford such a skilled courtesan. And that was just her public abilities. Some of the drinks and substances he and his entertainers consumed were rare and expensive as well.
At a point where they could not be overheard, Haikon spoke quietly to Karlo. "So, our wealthy friend Runmaru. Think you that he could be the guilty party? If so, he could have any member of his party do his dirty work for him."
Karlo nodded thoughtfully. "My thoughts exactly." He let's his gaze wander to the courtesan. "And it seems he has the perfect distraction. Be wary of her, friend."
With a grin Haikon said, "On the other hand, she may be perfectly at hand. Look you, she likes me; I can tell. Who to better divulge what her master's interests are? Based on what we suspect, I feel duty bound to pursue the lady. Now, perhaps we need to distract her master one evening! And that will leave her open to my probe. Can you think of a suitable diversion that will keep him occupied?"
Karlo let out a sigh. "I think you are letting your lusts cloud your judgment, friend. I find it very unlikely the strumpet know her master's intent. And you risk much with your plan. Nevertheless, I suppose it is the best hope that we have. Still, I know not how those of our station could contrive to keep Runmaru occupied while you are bout your...questioning."
"Hmm. There may be emotional attachment between them, but she also makes eyes at me. Karlo, the question is whether we can devise a suitable distraction at all. I confess that I am currently at a loss. Let us light fires under this pot, and see what stews, shall we?"
From the conversations while walking and talking around the campfires, some information about the woman has been deduced. She is Tsana hi Jubbah, an aridani of the Moon of Evening Clan. A mid level clan of merchants and artisans mostly, with clan centers in the southern part of Tsolyanu. They have no special religious affiliation.
While it may be unusual for a member of that clan to provide her talents for money, from the treatment in public, it doesn't seem that she is so employed. She appeared to be accompanying Runmaru on her own freewill. From his actions, there is obvious emotional attachment between them.
Karlo thought for a moment and rubbed his chin. "Think you that we have enough money to buy some sweetmeats at the market? After the night's dancing, I will attempt to flatter him with how well caravan is progressing, and how well he, err, handled the crisis a few nights back. With luck, I will be able to hold his attention long enough for your...questioning."
Haikon nodded, "That's a good plan. Let's pool our funds and see what we can get, without completely beggaring ourselves."
During the day's march they made a point of seeking out rare snacks and sweetmeats. Passing themselves off as members of Blue Palm, they were able to get favorable prices and a selection not offered to the other members of the caravan. After careful consideration of their funds and the available selections they settled on a likely choice. Completing the purchase, they were somewhat poorer but confident that their delicacy would be tempting.
That night Karlo asked for an audience with Runmaru and after the expected delay, was granted a brief opportunity. Having his servant pass the delicacy to Runmaru's servant, Karlo and his gift were presented.
Inside the tent looked almost a pavilion in size. Karlo could quickly see why the caravan took so long to get started in the morning. It looked like Runmaru had brought most of the portable possessions of the clan house on the trip. While friendly in nature, Runmaru attempted to portray himself as an important noble within his tent. He was curious of the favor Karlo seeked in return for the gift being given.
Karlo bowed appropriately. "Lord, if I may speak plainly...I am but a humble guard. I would improve my fortunes, but such has not been my lot. You saw how it goes for me, back at the attack. My clan mate left me behind to "guard" our simple camp site, while he went off to earn glory. I would not be left behind. You are both wise and influential. I ask only that you take me under your wing, and give me the chance to prove my worth."
"Though I look kindly on your offer, I have to admit that I have a plentiful suppy of "humble guards". If you had some less common talent to offer ..." Runmaru let the statement trail off with a meaningful look.
Karlo gave a wry grin. "See, you are as wise as I believe. Though my position is a lowly guard, there are few better in the woods than I. I can track a serpent across the rocky plain, and hide from the cunning fox. Perhaps these skills are of use to you?"
"While useful, I'm afraid they are not that uncommon. Tracking down this excellent food on the other hand, is notable. I don't suppose that you could find more in this miserable jungle?" Runmaru carefully selected another morsel and savored it with genuine gusto. "I can hardly wait till we reach Crossed Palms. From all reports they have a football field and a local team. Commander Ujjain has assured me that his men can provide a victory over them for our entertainment. You wouldn't have skill at football by any chance?" A gleam shone in Runmaru's eye at the thought.
Karlo grined, "I have some skill with the sport."
A smile suffused Runmaru's face as he rubbed his hands together in anticipation. "I do think there is a chance to give Morusai a well deserved drubbing."
He looked at Karlo as a fellow conspirator. "If I can find one or two more skilled players before we get to town, Commander Ujjain will be in for a surprise. I can hardly wait to collect his money when my team wins. You wouldn't happen to know of any other players in the caravan would you?"
Karlo grined and winked. "I think I might be able to find some able bodies."
While he had slept, Haikon's dreams had been full of possibilities. The next day, while it was Karlo's turn to bargain for food, Haikon's eyes had followed Tsana whenever she happened to pass within his view. Although he endeavored not to be obvious to onlookers, he had made certain he kept track of the lady's location. He also made sure he was clean and that his appearance was in order. Happening upon a flower at the day's end he completed his preparations. With the addition of a short poem of his own creation, that is, something he'd worked through in his head only this morning, and a conspirator's gleam in his eye, he had bid Karlo good luck and watched him leave on his part of the mission.
After a suitable time, Haikon had casually approached Tsana's locale, his glib tongue prepared for whatever awaited him.
Tsana's palanquin was the center of awnings and gauzy screens, reminiscent of a spider's web. Indistinct shapes could be seen moving within but the voice of an frustrated woman could be clearly heard. "This is all we have? I had this yesterday, and the day before. I can't wait to get to Crossed Palms. At least a town will be a change from this boring jungle. This trip has become so monotonous. The same drinks, the same drugs, the same music. Isn't there anything new any more?"
Ears perking, the young suitor strode confidently forward, making just enough noise so that he could not be accused of prowling. "If I might enlighten your evening, fine lady, you would make me the most happy of all men." With a roguish yet humble smile, our hero, young Haikon made his presence known. He awaited just outside the screen he judged to be most entrance like.
A barely seen motion by the lady and servants scurried. Screens of gauzy fabric were removed before Haikon and the lady was revealed reclining on her bed. As he was gestured forward, the previously removed screens were hung in new locations behind him. The path he had followed was no longer available.
She gazed at Haikon with momentary interest. "I have seen you before. You are the brave man who frightened off the creature that attacked the caravan. A noble action, I thank you for protecting me from that beast." Moving herself to a more flattering position that partially exposed shapely curves she continued. "Though I don't usually associate with just any man walking by, that fight was the most stimulating thing that has happened on this trip. Do you have other excitement to offer Haikon of the Blue Palm?"
Haikon, eyes sparkling yet with a flush upon his face, couldn't believe that he was there! His eyes flicked quickly to the curves the lady displayed, almost beyond his control. Then he lifted his gaze to her face again and took a few steps forward, consciously swaggering just a little. He was in good shape, and although probably not in her league, knew he made a pleasing sight.
His smile carried something of boyish charm, yet he attempted a gallant bow and replied, "Haikon of the Blue Palm shall be ever at thy call, oh exquisite blossom! Here is a humble reflection of the impression your grace has made upon my inner soul." He kneeled, and lay his tropical flowers at her feet. "While I may have won thy attention with my sword, I believe I might have other talents I could use in thy service." He smiled with a bit of daring in his face. "May I join you?"
Tsana looked upon Haikon's gift with a faint smile then returned her gaze to appraising his masculine form. "Such a glib tongue too. You may provide me with a much needed diversion after all," she said, almost more to herself than to him.
"Are you one who has more than casual acquaintance with my Mistress of the Thirty-Two Unspeakable Acts?" Patting her finely manicured hand, she indicated that Haikon should take a seat on the padded edge of the palanquin. Another fluid motion and refreshments were summoned.
Nimbly moving onto the palanquin, Haikon gave the girl another look, a bit longer and more meaningful than before. "I will claim no more than an active imagination, a stout constitution, and an eagerness to learn. I will need to be able to march on the morrow, though, and to defend the caravan if necessary, so nothing too damaging for now?" First looking for her approval, the young man tasted a refreshment, savoring the experience.
A laugh bubbled up from her. "At the pace this caravan is moving, you could keep up even if you had to crawl." In a more serious tone she added, "I wouldn't want you unable to defend us though. There is no telling what else may be encountered before we reach civilization." Playfully she continued, "A vigorous young man such as you should be able to sustain himself even without me resorting to prayers, unlike others I entertain. I am sure that we can find something pleasurable to do that will not cause problems for you in the morning." Her hand stroked his leg as she spoke. It had the desired effect. Soon the world narrowed to just the palanquin and those that joined them with exotic lotions and toys.
Meanwhile, Runmaru had summoned his personal musician. The man was very talented and entertained them with beautiful ballads. After several songs Runmaru called for dancers. A look of concern clouded his face as a servant leaned near and whispered something in his ear. "I will have to save my favorite treasure for another evening," he said. "It seems that she is indisposed. We should not let it spoil this celebration however." With that he called for more wine.
Late that night Haikon and Karlo returned to their own campsite. Karlo staggered back and collapsed just as Haikon arrived being carried but two slaves. The first thing either of them were aware of was the heat of the late morning sun. Their servants were trying to awaken them as politely as possible. The first of the caravan was already starting to move forward they said.
Weakly slapping Karlo on the shoulder, Haikon grinned ear to ear. "I think I've made some inroads with the lady. I'll begin bending her...ear, and see what I can learn, at my next opportunity. How did you do?" The young man began readying himself and their camp to move on.
Karlo groaned and rubbed his head. "So early for questions?" Suddenly he looked up at Haikon. "Be careful, my friend. I believe that Runmaru knows what you were about last night." He turned and began gathering up his belongings. "By the way; how are you at football?"
Haikon mopping his face with a damp cloth, looked up thinking he misheard. "Hm? What? Football, you say? I can play, if that's what you're asking..?"
Karlo breathed a sight of relief. "That is well. I sort of...promised Runmaru I could find some people skilled at football."
That day as they walked Haikon thought of ways to connect with the Lady on a different level than completely sensuous. To encourage that he would need to give her the impression that he had a brain worth conversing with. Haikon realized he was not too worldly, but he had spent a good deal of time thinking through how his society limited people's roles. Perhaps some pillow talk asking about how the life of an aridani must differ from that of a clan girl, as a start, and then segue into the caravan as a microcosm of life in the lands of the Petal Throne. Some examples of how, say, a warrior of Blue Palm may appear to have limited prospects; then a comparison with that of a certain influential merchant (her companion). Perhaps he could steer the conversation so as to get something useful...
Though distracted by these thoughts, he was still able to kick around the ball the Karlo bought from a village they passed. The distraction of maneuvering the ball was more welcomed by several other men nearby. Those that had been friendly over their shared campfires. One was quite skilled as was evidenced by some of the tricks he performed. The guards did not join in the entertainment. They did appear to be evaluating the skills being shown however.
In the evening when a servant arrived at their campsite before supper, Haikon knew that he had made a favorable impression with the Lady. He went willingly when her messenger presented the offer to share the evening meal in her abode. Once again he was lead through a web of screens that shifted behind him. The lady greeted him with a smile and a hug. During the meal he was shown that food could be sensuous but was able to steer the conversation to her life as an aridani.
He learned that she had a jewel smith she managed and part of the time she spent with Runmaru was a search for new inspiration and new materials. She felt that the time spent on the road was useful for focusing on new styles of jewelry she was designing. Her craftsmen would take the designs and prepare them for display when she returned to Penom. Runmaru had been struck by her artistry and owned several of her best pieces. He did have a refined sense of taste and was willing to provide for her comfort during her travels. She did admit that it was tough at first getting herself established but she was not sorry to have chosen the aridani path.
Haikon's obvious interest in more than her body kept Tsana talking. He commiserated with her on the additional expectations placed on an aridani over a man of the clan. Complimenting her on her decorations and unique tent, he learned that it was her own and inspired by the stories she had heard of the Splendid Paradise in Purdimal.
Runmaru provided supplies and entertainment for her. With his position, the clan provided rare luxuries to reward his service. They encouraged him to be away from the rest of the clan when he indulged himself . They believed it would reduce friction from those within the clan who frowned on the worship of Hrihayal, he had said. Runmaru had a sophistication of taste that was interesting and stimulating to her.
They had spent much time together and enjoyed each other's company. As followers of Hrihayal, they had many contacts for rare drugs and delicacies. She confided that some were even diverted from high officials for their personal pleasure. These trips along the sakbe road allowed them to mingle with other caravans and meet fellow worshipers from all over the empire.
