I have only just noticed (or rather, was shown) that on page 16 of Monsters and Treasure it states;
"Elves armed with magical weapons will add one pip to dice rolled to determine damage, i.e. when a hit is scored the possible number of damage points will be 2-7 per die."
Those Elvish adventurers are badder than ever!

Comes directly from chainmail, but modified. In chainmail an elf with a magic weapon fought as a hero (could slay a fantastical beast in one blow). All elves however even without magic weapons had quite a few abilities. Normally you rolled 2d6 to determine a hit with an average hit taking place on a 7 or higher (analogous to the d20 attack roll with thac0 19 vs. AC 8...about 50% hit chance). Against orcs they rolled 3d6 to determine a hit against goblins they rolled 4d6! If that weren't enough, elves did double damage to ogres and trolls.
+1 pip with a magic weapon is a poor substitute!~
