I grabbed the first one of these old school Chaosium monster books through RPGNow. While pretty bare bones in terms of art and presentation, I think there's some material worth mining here. Do any of you guys use these books? Should I grab the rest of them ASAP?

These are fun products and a good window into the mid-seventies west coast D&D culture that spawned the Perrin document, Arduin, etc. They are pretty bare bones but there are some good critters in there. Not worth collector's prices unless you're a completist but if you can find them for $10 or less they're definitely worth a look.

So, what's a run-down of the monsters? I'd always figured that they were mostly "normal" animals, with some monsters from myth and legend thrown in.

I think the TOC is somewhere on line. There are some mythical creatuers, many of the Arduin beasties in pre-Arduin form, some weird stuff which runs the gamut between lame and inspired, etc. I'm pretty sure someone on here (geoffrey?) bought my copy on ebay a long time ago, so someone should know...

I don't have the later volumes, but as I recall their character was similar.
Grodog: There are creatures from fiction, such as Jack Vance's The Dragon Masters. There are many monsters whose natural habitat is dungeons and whose natural prey is delvers. There are intentionally silly (yet dangerous) monsters such as the Blast Puppy. There are not many remotely "normal" animals (among the few being some giant types also found in the MM).
