I think the reviewer got everything just about right actually (except the play by phone part).
"Vastly too much has been attempted in these booklets, with very little detail, explanations or procedures." seems to sum the books up correctly.
"In general, the concept and imagination involved is stunning." Yep - right on target.
He completely got that the GM will have to do a TON more work than players. Yes, the books were over priced for their time. Yes, refinement was needed.
The part that he didn't get - nor did anyone really - was that people wanted that genre SO bad they would make the game work despite the short comings of the booklets. It was the very lack in those books that allowed people to create their own worlds and make their own rules.
I think he was right on - but missed the heart of the game that is OD&D - and that heart is not in the books - it is in the GMs and intrepid adventurers that play the game.
