I'm very impressed with D@D; Dan Boggs has done a great job of creating a unique and playable game that captures the pace and feel of the early days of fantasy roleplaying; DA must have been looking over his shoulder! That said, I would like to get some clarification on spell use if I could. I see the channeled energy or 'at will' spells, in particular Fireball, being mentioned in other threads as being available to even Level 1 Wizards, but Fireball is shown in the spell list as a Level 3 spell. Can Dan confirm the 'availability' of this spell, and Lightning Bolt as well, to Level 1 Wizards? Thanks!

Lightning Bolt and Fireball are indeed at will spells for Wizards. The idea is that these are little more than raw magic energy (numen) being crudely but effectively channeled by the wizard. Its a feature derived from CHAINMAIL. While Wizards have these as at will abilities, provided they pass a constitution throw, Elf Mages do not have any at will abilities. The primary reason Lightning Bolt and Fireball are also in the spell level list is for their use by an Elfin Mage.

Aaahh yes, that makes sense, I hadn't thought about the Elfin Mage's situation... Thanks for the quick response Dan! I'm using D@D to build a campaign world around Clark Ashton Smith's 'Zothique' stories; the very 'pulpy' nature of Dave Arneson's gaming mechanics suit Smith's Zothique very well, especially the magic, and you've done them good service with D@D!

Don't be too envious just yet, bluskreem! Things are still in the building stage, but I will endeavor to post at least highlights once we get going. The D@D rules are just a great fit, very serendipitous!

I would also be very interested in any reports from Zothique when they become available. Smith's Hyperborea would also make a good campaign setting, I think.

I may start a thread for Zothique when we get going on it. The biggest problem is herding everyone together on a regular basis; that darn adulthood and it's manifold responsibilities...
