With the sad passing of Gary Gygax (long may his dice still crit), does anybody know if there is going to be a biographical book written about him?

Someone mentioned at the funeral that Gary had written an autobiography, but that he wasn't able to find a publisher and eventually gave up on it.

Someone mentioned at the funeral that Gary had written an autobiography, but that he wasn't able to find a publisher and eventually gave up on it. That's a pity. I think a biography of Gygax, as well as a history of the hobby in general, is something well worth pursuing. I grow ever more convinced that the vast majority of the people who work in the RPG field nowadays have no sense of the the hobby's history or roots and that's had a profound (and negative) impact on the way it's developed over the years. The death of Gary reminded me of this even more, as I read quite a number of sincere but utterly uninformed comments about the man and his contributions to the hobby. Had I the time and money to do so, I'd love to undertake such an endeavor but, alas, I have neither at the moment.

Okay, here's a thought: Some wargames companies put out games only after they get so many orders (or commitments to order).
We could do the same thing.
If enough people paid for the book in advance to cover the costs, we could print it ourselves. I work for a publisher/printer, so I could get the details if anybody was interested.
Obviously, this would have to be done in very close coordination with Mrs. Gygax, and I would recommend that any subsequent profits would go to her.
But it is possible.

Don't the same guys who own Troll Lord Games also run a book-publishing company (Chenault & Gray)? Surely with all the Gygax titles they publish (many of them with seemingly minimal commercial potential) they could find room to add his autobiography to their schedule as well...

I firmly believe it'd sell.
I know I'd buy it.
