OD&D is all about taking a few guidelines and running with them. Players have a few more options and the rules are less limiting because they promote improvisation and doing it "your way". That's basically the core of the difference between ODD and all other editions of D&D. I agree. As it relates to the OP's concerns with B/X, I don't think ODD is the answer to them beyond the simple fact that the OP can make the game what he truly wants it to be. Want to award XP on Gold spent? Sure, why not? Level caps? Nope, none in ODD. Save or Die? Change it to massive damage, then? As for what makes a good dungeon, I would encourage the OP to have a look at AD&D's 1st ed Dungeon Master's Guide, but I'm probably biased on this. I love Gary's prose and the way he "draws you in" on the topic.
