Does anyone play Warriors of Mars? And, I mean as a wargame as it is written, rather than treating it as the “lost Supplement of D&D” (though there is nothing wrong with that).

Not I. In order to really enjoy a Mars miniatures game I would want to have a bunch of Mars miniatures, which at this point I don't possess. What I did was to mine the ideas and import them into my OD&D games.

I have been mucking about with cardboard counters on the carpet - I am too poor for many more miniatures but Peter Pig and Black Hat keep tempting me. For now, it's just proxies.
Green martians are extremely brutal on Red martian line troops. The rules are very similar to Chainmail, but streamlined.. I found it a lot easier to make sense of them on my first read than Chainmail's.
I have not yet experimented with large scale flier actions and their attendant boarding parties.
I'm also mulling over in my head the best way to handle multiple adventurers with the individual combat system. I dig how the initiative system works for one on one duels, but multiple combatant scenarios have some questions. More experiments are necessary, if I come up with anything I'll post it here.

I figure I'll read the books first, then check out this system.

Do pages 48 and 49 of WoM contain vital rules or just illos?

One page of each, actually.
PM if your copy is lacking...
