I never wanted anyone to assume that I was comparing the 3 LBB to the Bible - but biblical research was in fact the inspiration for the as yet unfinished Cover to Cover series that Chgowiz refers to above. The notion of dispelling misconceptions and removing misinterpretations are involved in the type of biblical research I was reminded of. I agree. My method in searching trough D&D rules comes directly from my readings about biblical studies. The search for Blackmoor rules was completely inspired by the search for the "Q document" ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Q_document).

I'm not attempting to compare the LBBs to the bible either, please don't misunderstand. I just think a companion would be very interesting to contribute to! My main question is how to set it up so that we're not in copyright violation. It would be hard to do a paragraph by paragraph interpretation without the paragraphs there - unless we reference section/page (which may be difficult if the pages themselves vary from printing to printing?) And welcome back, Sham!

I'm fond of likening the obsessive analysis of D&D source texts that I enjoy so much to Talmudic scholarship

We could do a heading by heading type thing.
We could use something like this as an outline:
Men and Magic Introduction Scope Recommended Equipment Preparation for the Game Characters (includes classes and races) Alignment Determination of Abilities Languages Non-Player Characters Basic Equipment Costs Levels and Number of Experience Points Necessary to Attain Them (includes class tables) Alternative Combat System Spells

IANAL, but how far could we go? Dave/Sham was pretty liberal in his quotes, but he didn't quote chapter and verse.

Hmm... thinking about that elf thread makes me wonder if maybe a wiki isn't the right tool for this - maybe a forum-like approach. Tombowings, I'm really sorry, I'm hijacking your thread! I'm going to move this to a different thread - here.
