Gimyip glances into the tiny rooms with minimal interest.
"Lady," Gimyip addresses Bothess, "If you have a clear idea where the Lotus can be found, I suggest we make directly for our goal."
He checks over his shoulder before adding, "The sooner get out of here the better."

Bothess shrugs, "I've told you what little information I could gather. Rumors say it came here and never left. If fortune is with us, Harbinger's Lotus is somewhere here within the walls of the monastery. As to where within the walls it may be found? I cannot say."

E'ssej raises his finger to his mouth and whispers: "You all raise enough clatter to raise those subhumans from the dead...yonder [points to the open archway] let's survey the choices...and be stealthy d**n you!"

Using a mix of troop-signal gestures and mime, Berist suggests that we move down the corridor to the south, listening at each door - perhaps Bothess should have this duty, in case her cybernetics give her amplified hearing or render her immune to ear-seeker grubs.
If we hear nothing, let's follow the corridor to the west, again following this procedure until we hear something suspicious, reach an open area, or detect an obvious threat.

[when we approached the place, presumably we saw at least the wall nearest to us - how far does it extend west and east from where we entered?]

[when we approached the place, presumably we saw at least the wall nearest to us - how far does it extend west and east from where we entered?] The Monastery of the Brethren of Ashing is inside a mountain. All you saw of place was the stone entrance and a set of steps leading downward. You recall Bothess relating to you, at some point during your journey here, the place wasn't supposed to be particularly large (as best she could find out).

You hear several somethings moving with clicking footfalls, probably at the diamond intersection to the north. Berist motions to the others to split into two groups. He designates Yashub-Yahad to lead the first, which will consist of Gozer and Bothess, and E'ssej Iu to lead the second, which will consist of Berist, Gimyip, and Buiq. He pantomimes the one in the lead crouching low and using a melee weapon to guard the others, who will fire over their head. Berist then points Yashub-Yahad's group to the north and E'ssej Iu's to the west, using a pincer motion of his hands to suggest that we circle around and fall on them from two sides at once.

E'ssej: <whispering>: "Maybe someone should stay here [in the intersection just to the west of where we are now] to give a signal when both groups are in position?"

Gimyip puts his lantern down carefully, and move into his allocated position, his fire-arm ready.
"Doubtless they see our lights," he whispers, straining his own eyes to see any light the new-comers might bear...

What does E'ssej do with his light?
Are you moving stealthily or quickly?
Are you going to attack or scope the situation?
Yashab-Yahud, are you okay with this plan?
Have I missed anyone?

E'ssej sets his lantern down quietly, slinking towards the source of the noise as stealthily as possible, stopping every few feet to listen again. If the footfalls sound close, he will charge forward swinging. If he can't hear anything, he will continue until just before the diamond intersection.

Group A (consisting of Yashub-Yahad, Gozer, and Bothess) moves east and then north to see the creatures have moved west past the intersection. Group B (E'ssej Iu, Berist, Gimyip, and Buiq) moves west and then north. They take up positions of concealment just as the monsters move into the intersection to their north (traveling from east to west as indicated by the arrow). In the very dim lighting you can make out 8 pinkish-red crustaceans, vaguely lobster-like, with bat wings. The clicking you hear comes not only from their footfalls, but also their pincers. The monsters are clicking their pincers as they as they walk; first one and then another. Perhaps they are communicating? The creatures seem to be able to see in the dark, as they are traveling quite fast and bear no light source. Note, the arrow on the map indicates the monsters apparent direction of travel. As soon as he believes the creatures have reached the center of the room to his north, Berist will shout "Shut yer eyes!" and toss one of his incendiary grenades into their midst - hoping to set enough things on fire that we'll have good light for shooting once we open our eyes again.

Gozer: "These suckers look like they'd shrug off one of my Sleep Grenades..."

Gimyip leans back into the alcove until after the grenade has gone off.
"That noise will wake the dead!" he warns, then turns into the corridor and fires his rifle at the closest target.

The creatures are about ¾ of the way through the diamond intersection north of group B, heading west, when Berist's grenade rolls into their midst.
The entire group stops.
One of the "lobsters" picks it up with its claw and looks at it, you can practically see the question mark on its face. It turns to look directly at Berist but, when it does, one of the lobster's companions makes a grab for it and a shoving match ensues. The winner of the struggle holds the grenade up, keening in triumph, and a split-second later the grenade explodes.
You are splashed with foul-smelling ichor and hammered with jagged pieces of chitin, but otherwise unharmed. There is a pinkish-red smudge and assorted body bits where the party of lobsters stood a few second before.
You are triumphant.
Group A moves west and then south and joins up with group B. Bothess eyes the wreckage with a half-smile and an unbelieving look on her face and says, "You have defeated a party of Mi-Go without suffering a single injury. It appears I have chosen my champions well."
Actions?
((meta-gaming: you rolled surprise, which helped the encounter end so abruptly. I was somewhat generous with the blast radius of the grenade because I couldn't help but laugh at the idea of the lobsters struggling over a live grenade ... the "rule of cool" and all that. I'm telling you all this to make certain that if you encounter a Mi-Go again, you don't take the encounter lightly. They are nasty opponents.))

E'ssej is still brushing off the pink goo when the groups connect. He resumes his position guarding the rear and suggests we follow the creatures' apparent westward trajectory.

OOC: I appreciate the feedback, I was worried I'd wasted a grenade! ((You're welcome. I'm trying not to tell y'all too much meta-game stuff, but I figured by 5th level your PCs will know some things and be able to intuit others.)) You set off to the west, the corridor appears to end just ahead with branches heading off north and south. Map: odd74.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=dubeers&action=display&thread=2641&page=1#36909

Gozer: "We were lucky, but noisy - let's keep an eye out for anything attracted by the sound of that blast."
[Gozer holds his rifle at eye level and covers to the rear as they walk west]

At Yashub-Yahad's suggestion, the party turns north. A short distance later, you arrive at a tee intersection. North is more corridor. South is back the way you came (and even more corridor beyond that). East lets into an foyer type area for a set of double doors to the north. The doors look well used but quite solid. Yashub-Yahad notices the middle part of the passage looks recently and heavily used. Beyond is apparently another 4-way intersection. Past that is a dark shape you can't quite make out with your present light, though you're reasonably certain it isn't moving. Bothess' eye whirs a few times, then she reports her findings. The dark shape is a round stone construction, slightly bigger around than a standard barrel. odd74.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=dubeers&action=display&thread=2641&page=1#36909

Gimyip moves cautiously nearer, so that the limit of his lantern light falls over the cylinder, and takes a better look at it...

Your closer inspection reveals the structure to be a well. Securely anchored to the stonework is a long silk rope with a bucket attached to the other end.

Berist notes the location of the well for later exploration, but continues to the north for now.

Gimyip can't resist approaching the well and glancing over the edge... Does the bucket look recently used? How far down is it to the water (if there is any)?

The bucket has a bit of water in the bottom. It is also free of dust and, if not new, at least looks as if it has been replaced when necessary rather than left to rot. Looking over the rim of the well reveals the surface of the water, approximately 20' below. There are ripples in the water, but ((INT check)) it looks like ripples caused by the flow of current rather than a living entity. As Gimyip inspects the well, the rest of the party carefully looks around. It is easy to see this area connects to the two diamond intersections at which the battle with the Mi-Go took place. There is a wooden door to the north of the well. Though the construction of the door is similar to others encountered here in the monastery, there is one difference. The door is jammed close with about a dozen iron spikes. Map: odd74.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=dubeers&action=display&thread=2641&page=1#36909
