If nobody has done so already, Gimyip picks up the gold carried by the mummies.
"We have achieved our objective here, so let us be gone," he advises. "There will doubtless be more daunting challenges ahead of us."

Casal anchors a rope and throws it down to the adventurers. She reports no activity into or out of the monastery.

Yashub-Yahad favours leaving. He doesn't particularly want a laser rifle, since he has sticky bombs.

((Anyone else want to weigh in, here? The party is divided in its intentions: stay and explore, or leave. I'll wait another day and then resolve the situation as best I understand it.))

Berist is wounded and one of his hirelings is dead, so he's open to changing his vote to retreat. The only thing that's nagging him is where the mummies came from. If there's another entry to the monastery, they might have come from afar, if not then (being undead) they might have been hanging out in here waiting. Can we look around and see if we can pick up their tracks before leaving?
(OOC: Crossposted from the Philotomy? thread, embarrassingly enough.)

A quick look around shows the mummies probably approached from the east. The stone work in the east corridor appears to be more worn than the rest of the monastery. In places it is crumbling and debris litters the floors.
Casals lifts Yashub-Yahad with the rope with no apparent effort. One by one the party exits the dungeon and departs the monastery by the now broken stair.
Sgt. Kelz insists on bringing the body of Buiq out of the dungeon in order to give him a proper burial.
It's late in the evening and you estimate you that, by the time you eat and break camp, it will be dark.

Gozer: "We should march a bit before eating, just to put some distance between ourselves and the monstery. Then find a concealed place to camp, eat, and sleep."

Gimyip surveys the surrounds for a likely camp site. Something defensible and within an hour or so march would be ideal...

[what's the surrounding terrain like?]

The terrain slopes downward to the south. The trail leading to the monastery is steep in places, and rather narrow. You seem to recall there being at least a few places within a short march where the party could make camp, if you so desire.

Gimyip spends a moment more examining the trail ahead, particularly searching for any movement of signs of recent activity.
Once he is satisfied that the way appears safe, he suggests: "Let us make for a defensible camp site along the steep trail," and then lopes off to scout ahead.

"I trust Gimyip'll find a good camp," Berist says. "Once'n we're there, let's leave the Lotus a ways outside camp. Somewhere tha sentries can keep watch on it, but the rest of us won't be surprised in our sleep if it draws more horrors. Maybe at the crook of a L-shape, with camp and one sentry at the top end and another sentry at the foot."

After a brief but very moving burial ceremony for Buiq, the party breaks camp and moves south down the trail in the gathering twilight. As the monastery recedes out of sight, Bothess glances back and turns quickly, "Double time! March!" She has you continue your quick-march for about 20 minutes, describing in shaking tones an obscenity of a creature extending, snake-like, out of the door of the monastery. It was apparently just searching and did not follow.
Another hour of marching and Gimyips spots an area he feels is a reasonably secure camp site. The party pitches their tents and eats a sparse supper of cold rations before falling asleep under the watchful eyes of the men-at-arms sentries.
Overhead, a thousand stars twinkle in the cool night air. There isn't much about the cruel world of Carcosa that could be considered beautiful, but you find yourselves strangely moved by the grandeur of the night sky. As you fall asleep, you hear Bothess sobbing in her tent.

Gimyip awakes feeling restored from his encounter with the walking dead, and quietly prepares a meager meal -- he is eager to return reach Prigruin's Tor swiftly, and be rid of the Lotus for good.
When Bothess stirs he asks, "What troubles you Lady?"

Red-eyed and disheveled, Bothess mumbles something vague about Obregon and hurries off. The party quickly forms up and sets off for the day.

Is Bothess carrying the Lotus? If so, is she willing to let others do so? Berist would like to take a turn holding it to see whether it has any effect on him.

Gimyip keeps a careful eye on the terrain as the party proceeds, and will climb any mounds, rises or high ground encountered to survey the surrounds. He is especially on the lookout for any sign of pursuit or interception.

The party travels the day without incident and makes camp. In the morning the party sets out again. It's a clear, sunny day. Off in the distance you see what appears to the same (or similar) dino rider you saw on your trip up the mountain, but it seems to take no notice of you.
Around the middle of the afternoon you reach toll gate for the Gem of All Men. Golv, this time in full armor, raises a hand in not unfriendly greeting as you approach. You see there is some damage to the gate that wasn't there on your passage through.

Berist takes the Lotus from Bothess and carries it a while. He gets a "funny" feeling when holding the jewel, but whether this is his imagination or reality is difficult to say. He suffer no ill effects from the artifact.
On the far side of the toll-gate, you note fresh shell craters in the trail. At one point Sgt. Kelz calls a halt and the party hunkers down as a line of giant jungle ants crosses the trail, otherwise the party makes camp without incident. You are making excellent time, Bothess estimates you will reach Jaftgong in the early afternoon tomorrow.

Gimyip is pleased with, but wary of, the good time they are making. Somehow it seems too easy.
When the party breaks for camp in the evening he suggests a double watch. He also sets about making a perimeter of little stone piles as an early warning system, should anything decide to go 'clunk' in the night.

The adventure continues today. Before we get into the upcoming sneak attack, I thought I would post the rolled hit dice, since one of you expressed interest in seeing how it all works.
As the rules state, d10 is rolled to generate which die is used for hit points. I roll everyone's, PC and NPC alike, and let them fall where they may. For this combat, the values will be as follows:
Gozer: (d6) 2 3 3 5 6
E'ssej Iu: (d8) 1 3 3 5 7
Gimyip: (d12) 3 3 9 12 12
Yashub-Yahad: (d8) 6 6 9 10 10
Mickeck: (d8) 5 6 8 8 8
Bothess: (d12) 3 4 6 6 9 9 12 12
Sgt. Kelz: (d12) 1 1 3 Casal: (d12) 2 Egin: (d4) 2 Gace: (d6) 5
Gozer actually has better HP with his d6 rolls than does E'ssej with his d8. Look at Sgt Kelz's very poor rolls with his d12! Gace, who rolled d6, fared better than Casal and her d12.
As the battle progresses, I will show how the dice are altered according to hits and how they are removed from the standing dice.
Good luck, everyone. This battle is going to be rather nasty.

Gimyip sleeps poorly, tossing and turning all night. Then, a noise to make his blood freeze; he hears the sound of two very heavy somethings hitting the ground, followed closely by a muffled curse and the sound of a small pile of rocks falling over. He looks up to see a yellow man standing over him, grinning evilly.
The yellow man is carrying two thin short swords, with a buckler on his left arm. His right arm is already raised to strike.
(you are surprised)
The sword comes down next to your head, somehow your attacker missed! As Gimyip springs to his feet, he notes with horror that his opponent is not alone, many yellow men are swarming into the camp. You see Sgt. Kelz engaged with three opponents, he calls out a warning to the camp as one of his attackers runs him through. Kelz falls, dying, as the rest of your groups rouses itself from sleep. The battle is on!
((the yellow men rolled surprise, but your attacker failed his roll, thus I added the narrative stating you had slept poorly and "smelled" trouble, evidenced by your doubling the guard. Kelz's attacker rolled a 6 on d8, more than enough to "erase" all his HD.))
Actions?
The Yellow Men are armored with metal studded leather harnesses and armed with cutlass-type swords with an evil-appearing back-hook on the blade, and all are using sturdy metal clad bucklers. As far as you can tell, they are all bearded and have long, unkempt hair.

Gimyip fire his x-ray rifle at the fellow who has just attempted to murder him if firing is practical, or else smashes him brute force style with a power-armoured fist if things are too tight for missile fire.
(OOC: I assume Gimyip must have been on watch and hence is still wearing his armour?)

Woken from his sleep, Berist will snatch up his sword and cover his fellows who are firing and his hirelings, to whom he shouts "Grab our weapons n' bring 'em to us!" He will strike savagely at any of the yellow foe who approach, falling back if they are too many to take out in a few strokes.

((I'll allow everyone to be in armor, due to Gimyip's uneasiness when you set up camp last night, but you aren't wearing your helmets. It will require one combat round to don your helmets, your weapons are at hand and in play.))
The yellow warriors make a fearsome yelling noise as they close with you. None seem to be carrying energy weapons, though a few carry javelins. Gimyip is up and armed already, since he was standing watch when the attack came, and with the ease of a seasoned veteran brings his x-ray laser to bear upon his charging opponents.
Gimyip presses the firing stud and nothing happens. Reacting quickly, he swings the rifle butt hard into the lead attacker and catches him across the jaw (1d20 = 20, damage = 5). The fellow staggers, dropping his swords, but doesn't fall; his cohorts are upon you!
Gozer throws a sleep grenade at the knot of warriors who attacked Kelz, all three quickly succumb to its effects. ((Successful DEX check: I'll allow a "shot from the hip" at -4)) Without waiting to see the outcome of that attack, he aims into the onrushing crowd of yellow men and presses the firing stud ... nothing happens. Two of the three men slam into Gozer, knocking him down. They both try to grab his arms but only one succeeds, the other rolls away cursing and scrambling to his feet. Gozer sees Casal rushing to aid him.
All of you notice your armor feels much heavier and more cumbersome than usual, and though you can move your movements are forced. Bothess goes running by, a captured sword in her organic hand. Her cybernetic arm hangs inert at her side and her mechanical eye is not glowing red as it usually does.
Each of you face three armed opponents, and Gimyip calls out there may be more holding in reserve out of the light range of the campfire.
