The following rules will (if I did my math correctly) approximate the results of the OD&D turning undead tables. But the chart is much simplified, and it can be easily memorized! I don't know how to post a table, so here it is in 5 sentences:
If the undead has 2 (or more) HD less than the cleric's level, turning is automatic.
If the undead has 1 HD less than the cleric's level, turning is successful on a 9 or higher on a d20.
If the undead has HD equal to cleric's level, turning is successful on a 16 or higher on a d20.
If the undead has 1 HD higher than cleric's level, turning is successful on a 19 or higher on a d20.
If the undead has 2 (or more) HD higher than the cleric's level, turning is impossible.
Thoughts?
