I know it's not strictly OD&D but I tried to do a one-page Martian variant on 'Searchers of the Unknown' Swashbucklers of MarsAny comments, ideas to make it more 'in-genre' ?

I haven't really done anything with "Searchers of the Unknown" so I can't exactly comment on the system part, but in general I like your 1-page doc. Seems pretty "in genre" to me, but I'll think on it for a while....

The whole problem with any D&D/Barsoom conversion is that the Barsoomians didn't wear armor at all. And the whole D&D combat algorithm is based on the type of armor worn. That's what doesn't work for me.
But if you're using a different take on Mars, then this works out nicely.
(I wonder how many of these one-page rpgs we'll end up having...)

This one is pretty nice too. There could be a fix for the armorless problem, but it would cut a base of the system, which is around the use of AC.
If you split the AC and the stunt&stealth score, roll 1d6 for each character 1 Very Quick (AC3, stunts 9) 2-3 Quick (AC5, stunts 7) 4-5 Medium (AC7, stunt 5) 6 Slow (AC9, stunt 3)
Not absolutely good...

That's better than anything I've come up with.
I just keep butting my head against the whole "but armor class is the KEY to the system!". That's why I can't wrap my head around using D&D for, say, space opera. I should be able to do it, I think, but then I just can't.

With ascending AC, like in S&W, that's not a trouble. Let's have AC=DEX or armor worn, which is better, and your problem is solved. But SotU is, like you said, based on the question "how to use at best descending AC". And that's where's the trouble.

Have an exalt.

Not to be too snarky, but does it seem funny to anyone else that we have a one-page RPG posted and then a day later a supplement? :-)
Also to chime in, I like using DEX modifiers for AC in my Mars games. I think it solves some of the AC progression issues. I've done something like this in my Swashbuckler campaigns. Again, the assumption would be that these modifiers only work for unarmored characters.
Actually, why not allow the DEX modifiers to be even more significant? How about this: DEX ... AC [Reversed] 10-12 ... 9 [10] 13 ... 8 [11] 14 ... 7 [12] 15 ... 6 [13] 16 ... 5 [14] 17 ... 4 [15] 18 ... 3 [16]
Maybe that's too steep a progression because it would make DEX 18 somewhat equal to Plate armor in other campaigns, but it would have the right effect in making certain characters harder to hit. Here is a more gradual one that fits the B/X model better: DEX ... AC [Reversed] 10-12 ... 9 [10] 13-15 ... 8 [11] 16-17 ... 7 [12] 18 ... 6 [13]
As a final thought, many Planetary Romance stories have characters wearing a "harness" where they can hang swords and guns. One could give a +1 AC as this would provide at least some minimal protection and could (in a stretch) be considered some form of armor.

An easy way to do it would be to just change what those numbers mean. Just off the top of my head here, you could do something like this:
Unarmored is AC 9, as normal. Bracers are AC 7, Harness is AC 5, and "Heavy" Harness (a harness with studded or plated straps, and a wider waist belt) is AC 3. Having a Dex of 13 or better adds +1. Both Harness and Heavy Harness include Bracers.
So your Dexterity takes the place of a shield, which to me fits the genre; people defending by dodging/parrying rather than using a shield. Add in a Parry rule (like the one in Holmes) and you're good.

Searchers of the Unknown came out what, about a week or two ago? And since then, we have 4 "clones" of it, three supplements, and an online game. That's the kind of thing that happens when creative people all come together around an idea, sort of like when a supersaturated solutions crystallizes. I love it, I'm happy to be a part of it, and I'm working on my own supplement to one of the games based on another guy's supplement to another of the games. Mine would have been done sooner, but I have DVDs that need watching...plus the usual other stuff. Oh, and I do like the Dex mod to armor class you suggested. I may use that for something...

I have to agree with coffee on this one. It's actually pretty spiffy. The simplicity of the format makes it easy to mod and keeps inspiration flowing. I think it's a great thing.
Swashbucklers is my favorite so far, because to me at least, the rules seem to mesh so well with the setting. I can totally see John Carter in Swashbuckler's terms.
I'm going to present it to my gang on wednessday to see if they are interested in a one shot or short chronical in a few weeks. (We have been running shorter one to 10 session chronicles for the last year or so.) I'm not sure how many are Swords and Planet buffs, but I'm sure any who are will appreciate it.

No doubtiung of your integrity, and I apologize if you don't appreciate my comment. I'd like to have you continue to feel welcome to post here. 2. I'm wondering if we lost Sean. He hasn't posted in 2 weeks. 3. I also noticed that his links are now broken.

Yeh, I know it was an innocuous comment, I had just returned from a couple of vicious arguments online elsewhere and it didn't take much to bring on a hissy fit. Most of my one-page stuff is now back up on the Bite The Bulette blog.
Apologies to anyone my full-on diva strop has inconvenienced.

I had just returned from a couple of vicious arguments online elsewhere and it didn't take much to bring on a hissy fit. This is why I don't hang out elsewhere. As someone once said, this is the only fun RPG board anymore. (Okay, it's not the ONLY only one, but it does have the best signal to noise ratio I've ever seen.)

I've just looked at them again and I should change the attack paragraph - adding 'equal to or': Attack: roll 1d20. If the score is equal to or under your opponent AC + your own level, it’s a hit. Example: to hit an monster with AC 6, a 3 level adventurer needs a 9 or below.
