In The Strategic Review Vol. No. 1 the following is mentioned, "CHAINMAIL will be reprinted soon in a third edition, with additions in the historic characteristics section to include the fighting men of the Far East, among others. Also added are sections in the man-to-man rules and some small items to the "Fantasy Supplement". The additional material, coupled with current costs will require that we raise the price, but that is unavoidable in today's economy. It is also hoped that we will be able to release at least one -- and possibly two -- companion booklets to CHAINMAIL, one to deal with the Crusades and the other with mythical English Medieval times (you guess which of the two possibilities we plan!) Both will use the CHAINMAIL system with modifications to fit the particular case."
Does anyone know if either of the two companion products ever saw the light of day? Or did the material show up someplace else as a Gygax product?

I've never seen them, and as far as I know they never got written or published.

We should probably collect questions to ask Gary or perhaps Tim Kask in the Q&A threads. What happened with these publications might be a good one for that. I imagine that D&D took off to the point that Chainmail just got left behind.

Sounds likely to me. I know that the SR mentioned a Crusades supplement and a Robin Hood supplement were possibilites. Honestly, I'm not sure what they would have added to make either supplement more period appropriate. Chainmail has pretty much all the rules there to begin with. Maybe they would have fleshed out the Robin Hood supplement with characterization rules ala D&D to allow for mighty stength, amazing accuracy and the like
