It was something about encoding. There is a new download link with those pages converted from png to jpg in the source document and the PDF dropped 30 megs! Now that's some quick weight loss! That, together with the hint about transparency is what I needed. I looked at the dwarf map and it is in fact black-on-transparent instead of black-on-white! I will avoid that in the future and make sure to submit black-on-white images!

But then I tend to work at A5, which is fairly close to the printed size, so I like to keep as much detail as possible; if I was working at a larger size, I'd probably scan at a lower resolution. I usually scan my stuff at 300dpi, import it into Inkscape, and trace it. Now I have a scalable black on white image, which I export. What I usually do is fit it on an A4 page including some margin and export it at 300dpi which usually results in about 2000x2000 pixels (equivalent to 6⅔x6⅔″).

Interesting. I'm still quite old-school in that I work almost entirely on paper, and only use a graphics program (GIMP in this case) to tidy up the scan, or to do colours and shading in the rare instances when I can work up the confidence to do something other than lineart!

I can't seem to download the 'new' PDF at all. However, the original seems okay -- some pages load slowly, but they do load -- so it's no biggie.

I've downloaded the new, smaller, pdf, and I've had no problems with it at all.

I can't seem to download any PDFs from Lulu now, for some reason. Argh! Anyone else ever have this problem? I've e-mailed Lulu about the problem, but am still awaiting a reply...

Lulu is crashing right now. They have pulled two print issues of fight on from my store. Interesting times...

I'm still seeing all the print copies available on the storefront, FWIW. I didn't check to see if all the options (perfect vs saddle stitch) were up, but all the issues are there.

I put them back manually. Hope lulu doesn't punish me for that. I'm awaiting an explanation still.
