Not sure if this is a 2nd or 3rd print, but it's cool. Let's see, if I sell the car, and my wife gets a second job... Someone buy this for me, please! Thanks.

Heh, I'm actually glad the price on that is already so high. If it were more "reasonable" (like, say, somewhere in the $500 range) I might actually be tempted to bid on it with the money I've been saving up to get a new car. But at $1,774.98 (reserve not met) with almost 6 days to go that's already so far out of my even theoretical price-range that I'm saved from temptation
I've resigned myself to the fact that unless one falls into my lap by some sort of coincidental fluke (a relative finds a copy stored away in an attic or some such) I'm never likely to own an actual woodgrain OD&D set, and I'm okay with that. My 4th printing (which has the white-box and 'new' cover art but still has the original font/layout on the interiors) is good enough for me.
I agree- thank god the price is so high, otherwise I'd probably bid on it too! I can only imagine the wrath that would be visited on me if I actually bought it!
This one will be fun to watch for the next few days.

Ok, just bid twice on the item, but still didn't get it. Reserve Not Met usually means the seller has his sights set far too high anyway. I'd like to see just how much this item sells for, if it ever sells

$1875 and reserve still not met. What do you think, $2000 reserve? $3000? $10,000? Am I the only one who thinks these last bidders are totally nutters? I mean, I'm a bit of a spendthrift myself when it comes to acquiring good D&D stuff, but spending that kind of money for something that ephemeral in nature.... All I can say is, the winner'd better get it added to his homeowner's insurance.
Personally, I think this guy's wife said his D&D stuff had to go and he said okay, but only if it sold on ebay. Then he set a $1 million reserve so he'd not reach reserve and would be forced to keep it. I mean, no one could expect a rational human being to spend four sig figs on that stuff... could they?
I ask, as I drool over the concept of owning it...
(Edit to add postscript) P.S. He doesn't list the amounts for shipping or insurance, only that the buyer pays. Also, he only accepts money orders or cashier's checks, not credit cards or Paypal, either of which might give the buyer some means of recourse if something went wrong. Am I just being suspicious?

It's at $2,029.97 as I write this, and the reserve has not been met yet, so who knows if it'll sell. I think it's time to start making guesses on what the top bid is going to be. Closest guess gets...well... nothing. Maybe an Exalt? I'm going pull a number out of the air and say $3045.

1st woodgrains have been escalating in price immensely over the past two years; I'd be surprised to see it sell for less than $3500. (And, per the seller, the reserve is @ $2500).
Well, if we all pool our resources we could buy the thing and make it a "forum collectable" which is community owned. If it sells for $3500 (divided by 49 members) that's only $71.43 each.
As forum creator, I volunteer to keep it at my house.

I think $3500-3800 is the probable range. The seller is reducing the price he will get since he is not accepting any payment method that gives the buyer any protection. If he was accepting payment with a buyer protection feature it would possibly double the sale price. A 1st print should bring $6000 and up; if it is in really good condition it should bring $8000-$9000 IMO.

At least if you buy a racehorse with that kind of money, it might win its own fees back in time. What can the boxed set do but get damaged further as time passes? I'm with everyone else on this; my boxed set keeps me quite content.

It can increase in value....much like comic books.

Well, it sold. Not a bad price either, I suppose- at least relatively speaking: $2,520.01 U.S.
I really wanted to bid, but I can at least take some comfort in knowing that my wife won't hold a pillow over my face while I'm sleeping. At least not for this! ;D
I was watching it that last 30 minutes, waiting and expecting for the real action to start. Sadly, it remained at that price. Not a bad price, but I was looking for a crazy price!

From the point of view of a gal who grew up with a ten dollar a month allowance if she kept her grades up and did minor chores about the house, that was a crazy price! (And yes, I know there are lots of you out there who had no allowances at all, and you should find this auction even nuttier!)

But the box looks like a woodgrain, brown and with early art with guy on horseback rather than the later one. Strange.

The lot went cheap. Alas, I was away and unable to bid, else I may now own a woodgrain (I dropped out of both of the sets at GenCon on Friday night... sigh).
