Tor’ku uses his staff to aid in leveraging stones. When the rumble begins, he throws himself to the side.

Sorry if I wan't clear. You roll two dice, but you don't add them.
You get two numbers and I roll 2 dice and get two numbers and if either of your numbers matches what I roll against your roll you are successful in avoiding damage.

(Waiting on makofan and eastwood for their rolls but I can check that later)
Beyond the portal now cleared lies a domed circular chamber which the light of your torches reveals to have a giant hole in the floor.
There appear to be no other doors or passages connected to the chamber.
The pit drops away into Stygian blackness with a precarious stone stair case built into it's side which drops away in a spiral down into the depths.
There is nothing more in the chamber than the walls and the pit from your view.
You know from the age of the rubble pile and the moss that covered it that no one has passed this way for many years-- you are the first to breach the depths of the hill maze for many, many years.
Like the tunnel you are in, the circular chamber is mossy, moist and cool.

Balesh rolled a 3 and a 1 Balesh is able to able to dodge the stones. He sees them bounce harmlessly off Gas Belly's chitinous dome. Karunaz and Doshi are also struck.

"Hmm," Mi'kimu ponders as he rubs his aching head and shoulder. "I know of holes in the sea that suck ships and their crew spiraling down into the deep. I've seen one take a double-hulled ship to its doom like a leaf in a river rapids. "But a spiraling hole in the earth ... I know not what to make of this. It looks ... unsafe at best. Tor'ku [ Tor'ku] perhaps you have heard of such deeps in your travels?"

Tor’ku peers into the inky blackness. Vertigo rushes over him, and he flinches backwards.
“I know only that over our empire’s long history, many wondrous and mysterious places have been covered in the course of time. Perhaps this descent will lead us into a time from before.”
“I will follow with my lantern, Balesh.”
Tor’ku inspects the steps, pressing firmly with his staff to check the integrity of the stones.

Vertigo rushes over him, and he flinches backwards. “I know only that over our empire’s long history, many wondrous and mysterious places have been covered in the course of time. Perhaps this descent will lead us into a time from before.” “I will follow with my lantern, Balesh.” Tor’ku inspects the steps, pressing firmly with his staff to check the integrity of the stones. As you enter the chamber, which is quite spacious, you all look around as To'rku peers down into the pit. Immediately you notice ancient ochre colored painted designs around the arch you have just come through. On either side are two serpentine figures which appear to be snakes but having arms. They are painted as tall as any of you and weird, endless rows of strange script are all around them. Tor'ku and Mohammad both sense that its some sort of ward, warning or magical charm. Though old, it appears that paint has been intermittently reapplied and the most recent application could be as fresh as a month ago. The stair on the pit looks quite precarious and will permit only one by one travel. It is set into the side of the pit and goes down into a spiral.

Balesh begins his descent.
(Will assume original ranks).
It requires courage of everyone to traverse the perilous course, as one mistep could mean death.
The stairs descend nearly 200 ft.
Soon the pit mouth above vanishes and there is only the dark well.
But at length Balesh sees a landing below.
Upon arrival he and the party come to an arch which leads to a tunnel.
There are more Snake paintings on the walls.
As you enter the tunnel you come to a T.
You may go east or west.
These tunnels are ancient and of squared design.

Let's proceed into the intersection, and see if by the light of Tor'ku's lantern we can discern any details or differences between the east and west passages.

Let's proceed into the intersection, and see if by the light of Tor'ku's lantern we can discern any details or differences between the east and west passages. The passages are 10' wide and abour 9' tall, square. They look in fine condition. The intersection splits east and west. Down the east way you find more strange hieroglyphs of a similar nature to what you saw above and also hear a faint sound that way...perhaps drums? More ominously you see something further ahead in your torch light's edge..as your eyes adjust you realize that piles of stones have been laid to hold up sticks along the sides of the tunnel and upon these sticks are human skulls. They appear as though they are a warning... As for the west way the walls bear no writing or images and it is silent, and not adorned with skulls--you can see some thirty feet in that it has another bend and appears to run north again.

They appear as though they are a warning... As for the west way the walls bear no writing or images and it is silent, and not adorned with skulls--you can see some thirty feet in that it has another bend and appears to run north again. The Shen nods approvingly. "That's my jungle cats! Perhaps we will provide new skulls for our unseen hosts...their own." Meanwhile Doshi kneels and begins sniffing the floor, giving a curious half whine. "What is it, Doshi?" asks the Lady. He looks up at her and shakes his head. "Not know...new" he manages in his simple speech. As you pass by the skulls you see they are all very old. The noise grows and you realize you are indeed hearing at least two sonorous drums being slowly beaten up with just enough tempo to have a rhythm - it sounds ritualistic. The passage continues on until on your left and right archways appear at intervals, about ten feet apart. They are doorless. As you cautiously approach the first pair of them, directly opposed from each other, your torches illumine part of them and you see a long tunnel like room beyond each. All you can see is that there are four feet rectangles of piled squared stones set up symmetrically throughout the room- the back ends of these chambers you cannot make out in the dim light without going in but you can see there is something lying on each one.

[OOC — I had suggested we head west, away from the skulls. Or maybe I misunderstood. But screw it, we're doing this!]
Perhaps we advance past the first archway and examine the next, on the opposite side — does it appear the same?

Right, I thought we were heading west? But if we are heading east, sounds like fun! We'll follow Mi'kimu's suggestion for now

Also — the next chance we have, let's try to identify the "something" lying on each pile of stones.

I was tired! You can certainly turn back! To your horror as you enter a chamber you discover the objects upon the stone shelves are skeletons--it becomes obvious that these are crypts for the old bones. They are not human skeletons. They are serpentine in nature with flat, sharply fanged skulls as of pit vipers. They have long bony tails but also have arms like people. They wear nothing. The bones show evidence of having been cleaned of flesh before being laid to rest here. At the back of the crypt is a very crudely carven snake statue about 6' tall, curled in loops and open mouthed and fanged as if about to strike.

Do we still hear the drums? Can we tell which direction they are coming from? A little mud-map would be nice here because I think I've lost the geographic narrative.
