Badges and event submission are open!
Planned so far...
Saga of a Battlestar
Action stations! The old Battlestar Lance survived the attack on the 12 Colonies with a refugee fleet of ships - but it can't jump to safety! Now it's up to you to save the fleet in this game using the 1977 Classic Traveller rules. You'll have a chance to explore, make decisions and, if the Lords of Kobol favor you, save the day and help the Lance and its rag-tag fleet escape! Pregens provided.
The Sublevels of the Black Maw - Gary/David tribute
Blackmoor and Greyhawk - the two original D&D campaigns find themselves represented in my Dungeon23 megadungeon! Choose one or all of the three doors that beckon. Explore several deadly sublevels and come away with glory and riches, or at least fun deaths to celebrate! You'll be using pregens, with OD&D + Chainmail as your game set.
Ford over Troubled Waters
Orcs/goblins hold Castle Ost! The Civilized Races hold Giant's Keep. Between them is lie the ruins of the old Fordhold, with a dragon living there! Who will take Fordhold? Who will defeat the dragon and claim its hoard? Take one of two sides and fight to the finish using Chaos Wars: a fun set of old school miniatures rules w/lots of 25mm Ral Partha figures on the table! Prizes awarded to players!

Silver for me this year. Decided to run more and didn't need Gold. Submitted and accepted are: D&D Like It's 1974! A newbie-friendly D&D experience that uses only the three little brown books published in 1974 and miniatures cast on/before 1983. Experience D&D like it might have been played in the early years. Emphasis on an historical experience, dungeon-crawling, player fun. Players: 3-8. Hours: 4. Sessions: 2 Dragonlance, the 1988 board game of aerial dragon warfare. Chromatic and Metallic dragons war over control of the fabled Dragonlance! An easy-to-learn game of aerial warfare with surprisingly deep strategic opportunities. Players will be formed into teams, each controlling a color of dragon. Players: 2-6. Hours: 4. Sessions: 2. (I'm not really a Dragonlance fan, but I dig this board game.) Here are some minis I just painted for the FA74 event. The Ettin is probably too "new" for me to take, but he was actually a fix that I worked into the mix (broken arm). 1978 Heritage Hell Hounds 1264a-d. 1978 Heritage Skeletons 1155a-b?. 1978 Heritage Cleric 1204a. 1988 Ral Partha Ettin Giant #11-410. drive.google.com/file/d/1l-adU3L-lWvNM-eHD9xgOGFmQDmjAVd7/view?usp=drive_link

Got a call this morning from Bob Meyer; he's been confirmed for Gary Con. He'll be running Blackmoor twice a day for four days, and will have his apprentice Blackmoor GMs there as well. Paul Stormberg will be putting out more information on this onto the Gary Con website shortly.
Bob inherited Dave Arneson's Blackmoor campaign after Dave passed away, with the blessings of Dave's family. Bob has recruited two experienced GMs to continue the campaign, and they've been running Blackmoor in the same style as Dave and Bob for several years. Playing with Bob and his team are about as close as one can get to playing with Dave, and this series of games are going to be pretty exciting. Or so I think, having seen them in action...

I wish I could go. I haven't been to a gaming convention in decades.

I've got my badge and am planning on running two game sessions. Probably the Forgotten Smugglers' Cave again and something purely LBB OD&D for the 50th anniversary.

One of my all-time favorite experiences was playing Blackmoor with Bob. Except that it was a big table and some of the participants were unruly and shouted over top of everyone else. THat kind of sucked. But Bob was a really engaging, soft-mannered, intelligent guy. And it was great to get the feel of the early style of play (pre to-hit charts, ability modifiers, codified class powers and all that).

He's having tables of no more then six, with six sessions over the course of the convention; his team will also be running six sessions of six, with the third GM filling in as needed for another possible set of sessions. From what I understand, he's also being given his own corner in the 'Legends of Role-playing' room, and I've been brought in as stagehand with my trade show equipment to provide noise walls to keep the sound levels down. He's reserving all day Sunday for open sessions, too. Bob is feeling very pressured and obligated to come down for the event. We've had a few more of the old-timers passing away, over the last couple of years, and Bob wants to run games and introduce his 'successors' whom he's handing over Dave's Blackmoor to. I'm handling the logistics and staffing, and they're doing the games. It promises to be quite the event, as Bob and his two GMs are pretty fired up over the opportunity to play the way that Dave did.

Question: have they severed the early D&D, Chainmail and other out of print games out of the regular con? What’s up with Legends and Founders con scheduled for the weekend before the regular Gary Con? Apparently we got to buy an extra badge and extra room & board. That kind of sucks

That kind of sucks No, F&L is a separate one-off con this year to celebrate the 50th anniversary of D&D. You can still run any type of game at the regular Gary Con as usual.

I hope you guys had better hotel luck than I did. I ended up down at the Harbor as the rooms sold out within about a minute. The geneva hotel website is terrible for booking. I really wish they would enter the modern era and fix their site. But, alas, I guess I will be closer to some of the better after hours restaurants and bars.

...it doesn't help that they release the rooms at the start of business Pacific Time. Why don't they do this on a friggin weekend?!

I don't stay in Lake Geneva for GaryCon anymore - just impossible to get a room at the Grand or Timber during that time. I'll get something down the road or in Elkhorn - easy 20 min trip and a lot less stressful in getting accommodations!

I feel for him. I would love to have been (and would still love to be) one of his understudies. Having watched what he was doing, I definitely think I could run a game that way and have considered doing it for different groups. In any case, I love that he is coming and still giving people a glimpse into a different time and style of play -- one that predates the formulation of D&D.

Thanks for the kind words - I'll pass them along to him.
He had a great game back in 2018 or 2019, which is where he met the Dynamic Duo. They play like he does, and so he's working with them to keep that 'Arnesonian' play style alive. He's on my forum, and does respond to questions; I don't think he's on here, though. He's pretty much backed off the Internet after the very hostile reaction he got on another forum - not this one! - to his account of what became his last Blackmoor game. If you can make it down to Lake Geneva - I say 'down' 'cause it's south of here - he's scheduled plenty of time to talk to people outside of the formal game sessions.

*bump* Just under a month until Gary Con 2024! Gold badge game registration was last week, and Silver registration is tomorrow. I'll be there, and as planned am running two games, my previously run Forgotten Smugglers' Cave, and a brand new one for the 50th anniversary: Party of Balrogs, a LBB game where the PCs are all Balrogs (!).

Silver registration went well for me - got all of the games I wanted - and my games are both full now. Among other games, I'm signed up for TSR's Knights of Camelot (on a giant board), the Siege of Bodenburg, the AD&D Friday night tournament ("Nexus of Elder Evil" this year), and a tour of the Gygax house where D&D was written (330 Center Street) by our own stormberg...!

My first time this year, but I didn't want to miss the 50th. Also spending a few extra days in Chicago on the front end to knock something else off my bucket list: The world's biggest video arcade, Galloping Ghost, with almost 1000 unique machines! Managed to snag a gold and a ton of great event spots, including the aforementioned Blackmoor, some Braunstein, Metamorphosis Alpha with James Ward, and both Castle Greyhawk and Chainmail off-site at the old Gygax house. So yeah, pretty dang stoked.

Mostly I'm just feverishly plotting how I can get all the autographs I want! I'm trying to limit myself to a "reasonable" amount of books to pack.

I'm not quite panicking (yet), but my Balrog scenario that I mentioned above is still sketchy in some parts. I like to have everything detailed before I run a game, so it's leaving me unsettled as I try to find time to work on it.

The pregens I had created back in the fall all vanished from my cloud account and backups. Stupidly, I didn’t have them stored locally, so I’ve been recreating 10 12th-17th level PCs. I’m nearly done, but that’s also edged into my scenario finalizing too. First world problems, but still problematic Allan.

Kind of bummed that I never got around to organizing a trek to GaryCon this year. Saturday totally booked with dentist, soccer game to do stats for, St. Patty's party and anniversary with the wife ... not any time to drive to Lake Geneva. Hopefully next year. GaryCon is a real blast!

I'll be at Founders and Legends Con tonight to play in Grodog's game. I am not a founder or legend, but going to just get out of house: see and be seen. Holler if you'll be there.
I'll also be at Gary Con next weekend, but don't have any specific plans. More of the same as this weekend.
