Over in the Edition Wars thread, the question of an annotated OD&D was raised. It happened that not just one, but two board members (at least) answered the call. That's quite encouraging, I think. I let Piper know that I preferred his fan-made supplement as my first addition to the 3lbb's, in my new (glue is still wet) game box. That led me to question what some others might consider the essential OD&D supplement, if there could only be one. Now, the obvious choice would seem to be Greyhawk; and I might agree, but what of these other alternatives: I've got my reasons for putting these five in the poll. If you can't decide on one, please feel free to list your top 2 supplements instead. note: I'm sure I had one more official/unofficial supplement in mind when I made this shortlist, but it's escaping me for the moment

Philotomy's Musings informs every aspect of my play. So that's my top pick, even though Greyhawk has so many important goodies and the Ready Ref Sheets are so loaded with tables for every occasion.

I voted for the Ready Ref Sheets. There's nothing that's been more useful in actual OD&D play for me. If I were running a game today, and I had the 3 LBBs, it's the fourth book I'd want.
Philotomy's Musings is very nice for general ideas and inspiration but not a table-ready supplement, and I'd guess the same is true of the OD&D Annotated document. I don't run mass combat so the Book of War isn't really useful. Gods, Demigods, & Heroes is not particularly useful for me. Best of the Dragon has a few good articles but nowhere near the density of usable tables and rules of the Ready Ref Sheets.
Honestly a supplement I think is underrated is Geoffrey's Carcosa (I still have the original printing). I wish there were more books like it that took the LBBs on a hard turn away from generic Tolkien fantasy while matching them closely in style and layout. I like its monsters and items even for non-Carcosan games.

Ready Ref Sheets for me, too. I remember that there was a cache of new-old stock available from somewhere (the JG website, I suppose) a while back. They were selling for something like ten dollars a copy. Am I crazy? Does this sound familiar to anyone? Anyway, it's too bad about Judges Guild, because I think that there won't be an affordable reprint of the Ready Ref sheets, again, in the foreseeable future

I bought a couple of copies of RRS back then for really cheap.

He still has a few old bits and bobs of original old school stock, though he's nearly out of everything. I bought a bunch of Thieves Guild stuff, but I missed the Ready Ref rush (I think all of you lot beat me to it).

Short answer: No. Longer answer: There are only 178 (out of more than 6,000) copies left of the Lamentations publication of Carcosa. Also, my 5-year contract with Lamentations expires later this year in 2023. What happens after that? I don't know!

Long time fan of Superdan, and I also think the best of dragon has some of the best additions to the game. I would say TSR and the Dragons are the best supplements, collectively.

I voted for Philotomy's Musings & BotD Vol. I, but Ready Ref sheets & BotD are a close tie for 2nd place IMO.
The best supplement to 0e for me is Il Male's Single Volume Edition, altho I don't know if it actually qualifies as a supplement - rather it is a re-organization of the 0e rules.
After getting this, I wouldn't have even tried to play 0e in the first place.
