I’ve got the two-volume Guide to Glorantha and The Glorantha Sourcebook — altogether over a thousand pages — and am glad I also have older works to fill in details.
That however is — like my having the Gamescience Tekumel Sourcebook and the Starmont A Gazeteer of The Hyborian World of Conan — a consequence of having my appetite whetted starting with an introductory sketch.
Someone who gets hooked on Tolkien or Star Trek could likewise end up acquiring a lot of material.
Judges Guild’s original Wilderlands of High Fantasy got many referees to buy more of the series, and probably most often they started before that with adventures that gave a taste of the setting.

I love the early Judges Guild stuff. Some of the best were reprinted in Goodman Games Deluxe Collectors Editions vol 1 and 2. If I had to narrow it down to one, I'd say Citadel of Fire.
