I am in the process of expanding my TLBBs to include monsters from other D&D sources; and I want to stick with pre-supplemental combat system (d6 HD and damage). While I realize that I should just go with what I feel works, I am a little curious. Does anybody have any advice or wisdom to pass along from their own efforts?

When making new monsters I try to keep a couple of things in mind:
Should this critter be as tough as an orc? An ogre? A giant? I keep ACs in the 5 to 7 range unless the monster is particularly hard or soft. 1d6 damage is enough for most cases. 2d6 is best reserved for really bad dudes. The more special abilties a critter has the harder it is to run without looking it up, so when adapting monsters from later sources I tend to cut back special abilities for ease of play.

I realized, with my french translation / adaptation, that most animals have fewer hit dice than in AD&D montser manual. A wolf has 2d8+2 or someting like this in ad&d, and it is suggested that it has 1d6 in Od&d (it can killed with an arrow, which is fine). So I downsized other animals accordingly.
