I think Gary, Rob, Tim, and the 3 Daves should have remained in charge of D&D. Arneson and Magerry ... who is the 3rd Dave? (I'm sure I am just brain cramping) Wesley.

I think Gary, Rob, Tim, and the 3 Daves should have remained in charge of D&D. Why? (I don't disagree, just wondering about your perspective) Because They designed original D&D. I’m talking about the time period before the game was published; before the focus shifted to big money and power. These guys experienced what seems to be the original motivation for the game: having fun creating, and playing, new types of games with your intelligent and imaginative friends.

It is a classic for sure. I wish that when they reprinted it with the new Jeff Easley cover they would have made it full color using the art from the Monster Cards. Every piece of art from the original MM was colored in those rub-off transfers as well. Would have been cool. Really I wish they'd revised all the core books when they did the orange spine versions.

I know I'm jumping into this late but I just saw it now. I'm a confirmed EGG fanboy, and I would love to rewrite history and have Gygax be in charge of D&D until he saw fit to retire. 1e AD&D is my game, always was and remains to this day. I think Gygax could've managed the business, although I don't see him needing to micro-manage if he got competent people in there. I like his game design and his adventures and setting materials. I like his vision for the game. Do I think he needed to write every word in every book? Of course not, but I'd want him in creative control with the final say. Now as things went down, he had to react to various and sundry issues that colored the product, and I honestly don't know how he persevered after the whole debacle that cast him out. I know I couldn't have, and I'm sure it affected him in many ways. It was a shame, and I'd prefer he had been free to do what he thought best. I think that would've been better for the game and for the hobby. Was there a place for both Basic and Advanced editions of D&D? Sure, so long as they remained what they were labeled as on the tins. As to where we ended up, I don't care for any of the subsequent re-writes so I would be happy to wave them out of existence.
