Years ago a PDF of a series of stories casting Morgoth and Sauron as the heroes of the story was making the rounds.
I cannot remember the name and my Google fu fails me.
Essentially, when Morgoth went out into Middle-earth in the time before time he discovered that the world required balance when it was made, so when Eru made the elves to be beautiful and good he made the orcs to be ugly and wicked; the trolls were made to balance the ents; and so forth. All the evil and ugly in the world was made to balance the beautiful and the good, and when the other Valar chose to welcome the elves and hate the orcs, he chose to champion the "underdogs," as they were as much the creations of Eru as the "goodly folk."
And so in the Ainulindale, he was not dissonant with the will of Eru. He just didn't go along with the preferences of Manwe and the other Valar... Though they see their preferences as matching those of Eru, of course...
There was also another valier, whom he found in Middle-earth and took as his wife, and who was slain by the Valar when they cast down Utumno (IIRC).
The stories went all the way through to the end of LotR. There was a story where we find out that Gandalf and Sauron were best buds back in Valinor in the olden days. Similar kinds of things. There were some illustrations, and the pdf compilation had an Elvish name...
I lost my saved copy many computers ago.
Does this sound familiar to anyone? I've seen a few more recent such fanfics, but not on this level (and it's not that Russian knock off, to be sure).
Would make for an interesting background for an Orc campaign...
