The Fall of Numenor will be available in November according to this video. Although Christopher Tolkien did not live to see this published, he was involved in the production.

Hmmmm. Without Christopher involved, I wonder what we can expect.

“Brian Sibley has assembled from the various published texts in a way that tells for the very first time in one volume the tale of the Second Age of Middle-earth” — official press release.
So just a new collection of stuff that is already in-print in other collections. Just so they can have a nice clean tie-in product for the TV show.

I'm kind of excited, even though I probably own all of the material in separate books. I like the notion of all Second Age stuff in a single volume, arranged in order according to the timeline in the appendices in the Lord of the Rings. Same feeling when they put out the individual novels for Children of Hurin, Beren and Luthien, and Fall of Gondolin. I own the whole HoMe series so I probably have all that stuff, but there is something magical about having it in one book without having to worry about the various editions and changes along the way. I'm hoping that The Fall of Numenor is kind of like that.

There's a key ingredient those three releases had, which was they were primarily the editorial work of Christopher Tolkien, who is sadly no longer with us. I wonder how much he was able to contribute to this one before his passing.

I agree with you about The Children of Húrin, and if this new release is in that style it will be a satisfying read for fans new and old. I could do without another Beren and Lúthien—painstakingly comprehensive and overwrought with commentary.

I'd love to see a table of contents of this. Is there one out that I've missed? I figure that none of the content will be new. It's probably based on Unfinished Tales with some stuff from the HoMe set of books. Maybe the "author" is just organizing, maybe contributing connectors to make the material flow. I'll bet the Amazon film-makers could have benefitted by a book like this BEFORE they started their series, rather than after.

Brian Sibley posted this on Twitter: “This edition draws on ‘Akallabeth’, ‘Of Rings of Power’ and material from ‘Peoples of ME’, ‘Sauron Defeated’, ‘Nature of ME’, ‘The Lost Road’, ‘Letters’, ‘LOTR’ etc”
He doesn’t mention UT but probably that too.

The book arrived in the mail today. I've only gotten a few pages into the thing, but it's not at all like what I expected. I think that it's better than I expected.
I thought the book would simply be a reprint of a bunch of essays from the Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales, and the History of Middle-earth books.
What they did was very different than that. The book starts with a "Tale of Years" of the Second Age. A couple of pages of years and a general statement of the event, much like what can be found in the Appendixes of the Lord of the Rings. Where it gets interesting to me is that those general statements become "chapter titles" and the authors have scoured Tolkien's writings (the ones I mentioned above, plus Letters and other sources) in order to find information about each of these events. That information is then presented as text within each "chapter." The introduction states that as much as possible the passages are pure Tolkien without re-writes, but sometimes they are taken out of context and/or re-arranged a little so that they follow a consistent chronology.
In other words, by reading the book cover to cover one gets something a lot like Tolkien writing a chronological history of the Second Age. At least, that's what I get from the introduction and in thumbing through the book it sure looks like this is correct.
Much more cool than anticipated, and I can't wait to have some free time so that I can read this book!

I'm sort of surprised that no one has commented on this so far. Am I the only one who bought he Fall of Numenor?
I've gotten through a couple of chapters and feel like the "authors" have done a great job of organizing Tolkien's thoughts and words. I just wish I had more time to read....

I'll probably wait for the paperback. But if it is written in all exposition I find that kind of writing dull to read; like the entire Silmarillion. I might get the audiobook, but it sounds like the kind of book best experienced printed.

I let to my other half that I had seen the hard cover in a book store, and I was told in no uncertain terms that I was not to buy it. Read into that what you will

I ordered Fall of Numenor from Amazon, along with Tales from the Perilous Realm and a Sindarin dictionary. I should be getting the books this week.

I'm still reading the book, since I'm a slow reader these days. That's okay; I'm savoring it. There's a lot of stuff I didn't know before.

My favorite section concerned the events that happened in Eregion/Hollin. Have you read that part yet?
