In 7th grade (1981-1982) my English teacher assigned a book to read. I can vaguely recall details, and cannot remember the name.
It is in that same space as Chronicles of Narnia, The Hobbit, Chronicles of Prydain and others between children's books and young adult.
An isolated village that lived in a valley Legends of others (creatures ?) that lived on the other side of the mountains that no one believed. A male protagonist warning that they were going to be invaded, no one believed. They did get invaded (through tunnels?)
Yeah, pretty vague recollections. But I wish I could remember what the book was.

It didn't have anthropomorphic animals as far as I remember, and was far less famous. I know my clues are super vague. I'm trying to recall more. There was a wise old man advising the young protagonist. The teacher told me she read it when she was younger. This was 1982, so if she was in her 30's/40's and we go back 20 or so years, means it was published before 1962. Maybe.
