Yes. I won't necessarily be using anything from the ESB book but that was a little tidbit that appears there and maybe some comics and nowhere else. Yet another of infinite "pocket continuities" that could be explored.

Benny Lars
Benny Lars grew up poor on the desert planet of Tattooine, a moisture farmer like his father and grandfather before him. Tired of the dull life at Toshi Station, Benny shipped out on a freighter to see the galaxy. Along the way he met members of the Brotherhood of Jedi Knights and found that he had some talent for things Jedi. He served as a squire to learn the secrets of the Brotherhood and eventually graduated to their ranks, whereupon he assumed the name of Obi-wan Kenobi and went on many adventures with his friend Ken Skywalker. The Brotherhood served as space marshals and enforced the laws of the President of the Galactic Republic. In the Clone Wars Obi-wan was promoted to General in rank and oversaw the defense of the planet Alderaan and its king, Bail Organa. Along the way Obi-wan was assigned the task of tutoring young Darth Vader and helping him join the Brotherhood, but when he found that Darth was cheating by using the illegal Spice enhancer he testified against Darth and got him banned from the Brotherhood. When the Republic was overthrown by Tarken and others who controlled President Palpatine, Obi-wan chose to flee prosecution and returned to his birth planet of Tatooine, where he lived as a hermit named Ben near the settlement of Anchorhead.
Darth Vader
Once a member of the Brotherhood of Jedi Knights, Darth found that he was never the strongest or best of the order and he grew jealous of his peers. As part of his law-enforcement duties for the Brotherhood, Darth encountered a band of smugglers with a load of Spice from Kessel, and at this time learned that the spice had the ability to enhance Force talents. It was also highly addictive. Aided by the Spice, Darth soon found that he could out-perform many of the Brotherhood in Force prowess. Excited by this, Darth increased his dosage through a breathmask and helmet with the hope of becoming the greatest of the Brotherhood, only to find that such dosage changed his body and enhanced his anger along with his Force strength. Darth was thrown out of the Brotherhood when is addiction was discovered, and he went into the employ of Moff Tarkin, who has political pull and can keep Darth supplied with the Spice that he needs and craves. When Darth gained some stature in the galactic political scene, his first action was to convince Tarkin to disband the Brotherhood and kill as many of the Jedi as possible.
Tarkin
The Moffs were a group of Galactic governors who each commanded a sector of solar systems. Tarkin clawed his way through politics to become a minor Moff, but it wasn’t until he met Darth Vader that he could finally ascend to greater glory. With Darth Vader as his principal enforcer, Tarkin rose to greater heights and when he managed to obtain blackmail material enough to control President Palpatine, the puppetmaster Moff Tarkin was voted Grand Moff by his peers. Now Tarkin has taken control of a significant portion of the galaxy, aided by a secret project known as the “Death Star” and an enforcer named Darth Vader.
Luke Skywalker
A teenager thought to be a total loser by his family, Luke has a keen aptitude for flying spacecraft but not much else. Lacking the motivation to be a moisture farmer, Luke prefers to spend his days hanging out with friends and avoiding work assigned to him by his uncle. Luke has a vague idea of joining the military to become a pilot, if for no reason other than to escape backwater Tattooine and the wrath of his uncle Owen. Luke’s father had the knack for the Force and was a member of the Brotherhood of the Jedi, but Luke knows nothing of this and the Brotherhood is pretty much disbanded.
Leia Organa
Leia is pretty much typical of the rich and pampered, having never held an actual job in her life except for the political appointments that her Princess heritage entitles her to hold. While she has few useful skills, she is a capable diplomat because she is used to issuing orders and expecting others to follow them. She also has an unusual sense of fair play instilled in her by her father, King Bail, and this has led her to join up with a shadowy group known as the Rebellion. Leia’s experiences with the Rebellion has gotten her into trouble, however, as they have exploited her political position and ancestral wealth to help organize and finance a group of malcontents who oppose the rule of the President.
Han Solo
Han was at one point a member of the Corrillian space force but was thrown out for insubordination. He is a competent pilot but is continually in debt because of his inability to deliver cargo safely and on time. Han and his partner Chewbacca are in the process of trying to buy the Millennium Falcon, a well-loved but totally decrepit freighter spaceship. Han is always looking for some sort of angle or shortcut to wealth and success, and is hoping that such is just around the next corner.

Sounds like you're as eager to revisit your campaign as I am to run one, Fin. Lots of good ideas there. Not sure I'd 100% go in those specific directions but you're onto that pulpy feel and integrating a lot of the discussions here seamlessly. It seems very OD&D to me so far.

And by the by, I know it was easy to overlook or miss because it's mentioned exactly once, but the name "Anakin" is uttered by Alec Guinness in Star Wars '77 once, when describing the history of the Jedi. Luke's father is called Anakin in the original Star Wars novel? I don't remember that (but it's been some time since I read it).

I think I had a massive brain fart on the Anakin thing.)

I do intend to re-read the novelization again in the near future. It's been a little over a year. I could be misremembering. Some of these things get jumbled over time.

Okay, I think I remember why I thought Anakin was named in the novel. I own a compilation version with the novelization of the original three films. I actually don't believe the name Anakin is uttered until ROTJ, meaning as per the parameters of my thread I am not bound to use it.
I think. I will definitely pay close attention during my next read through.

I don't remember the word "Anakin" being in either the original movie or novelization, but it wouldn't surprise me if ol' George didn't slip something like that in later. He's sneaky like that.

Okay, yes. I just confirmed that I had been turned around. The name "Anakin" isn't mentioned in the novelization at all. However, Obi-Wan mentions ducks, and Luke asks "what's a duck?" That made me laugh because it reminded me of this.

The last 25 years of Star Wars have really sucked my love of it out of me, but reading through this thread has inspired me to pick up the first novelization and splinter of the minds eye again! It’s been decades since I read them, and my memory is total garbage, so it’ll all be brand new again. Sounds like a great campaign idea!

More pulpy and old school by a country mile. I'm outlining my own campaign as we speak.
