For anyone who was on the fence, I was looking up some info on HeroQuest and the Google Shopping recommendations showed me that the new retail version is currently on sale at both Amazon and GameStop for about 30% off (quoted total pre-tax price of $85.51). Honestly, I have the spare cash and I myself will have to think long and hard if I want to buy a second set just to get duplicates of all those miniatures... I don't need them and can easily do without, but I still kind of want them.

Oh I know that discount. My copy came in yesterday, along with Return of the Witch Lord, and I'm still waiting on Kellar's Keep. While both expansions do not have the same discount, I get all three sets for less that the retail cost of core Game System.
Just a heads up with Amazon: The box of the core Game System will likely come in banged-up or damaged. It did with my copy along with a number of reviewers in the comments. That is likely the source of the big discount. Save for some slightly warped figures (treatable with a mug of hot water) and a banged-up bottom corner of the box, the set came in OK -- not enough damage to warrant a refund or exchange. The RotWL set came in the same delivery box as the core game and it was in great condition.
d**n its is a great remake! I cant wait for them to make new sets for Against the Ogre Horde, Mage of the Mirror (Elf Quest), The Frozen Horror (Barbarian Quest), and Wizards of Morcar. (hopefully they make them)

I've just sent that review video to everyone I know. It's fantastic! It caused me to add the Brode Swode to the legendary artifacts of my setting years ago.

Things to note about the 2021 HeroQuest game: - All books are word-by-word reprints of the old NA editions (with only minor changes) and are glossy, full color pages.
- Due to copyright and trademark, all things "Chaos" are now "Dread" (Dread Warriors, Dread Spells, etc.) and the Fimir are now large humanoid fish called "Abominations" (looks like Lovecraftian Old Ones)
- The board is larger, folds-up more compactly (three-folds and a split), and each square is about 25mm, or 1 inch (it was 22mm in classic HQ)
- All tiles have small rounded corners
- There are new tiles to make use of (they are not used in any Quest and lack special rule to use them, so are for custom Quests):
- Some type of Marker (Zargon's icon on one side and Hero's icon on the other)
- Straight stairway (under the normal stairs tile)
- Sewer grate (under the double block tile)
- Bone Pile (found in Return of the Witch Lord)
- Stature (found Keller's Keep)
- Hero Cards are now regular cards (each player gets one card with the Hero's information and a "What You can do in a Turn" card)
- There are 4 new Artifacts (its up to the Zargon player to give them out as none of the Quests offers them)
- Like with the old EU (European Union) set, equipment are now printed on Equipment Cards (not printed out on the box insert), but you are not bound by the limit of cards.
- Some EU equipment are added: Bracers; Hand Axe; Holy Water; and Potion of Speed (but no Spear)
- Treasure Deck is the same as the old NA (North American) set, but Holy Water and Potion of Speed (from the EU set) are now equipment you can buy
- Artifacts from Keller's Keep and Return of the Witch Lord are normal-sized cards (not cheap cutouts) and the Alchemist's Shop potions are now on Equipment Cards
- All doors and furniture are cast in hard plastic with no cardboard bits (Tomb can open up and the skull and rat decorations have no pegs so now require glue; also, hard plastic is not immune to warping)
- Miniatures are slightly bigger and are mounted on a round 25mm base (instead of the uneven 23×21mm base)
- Miniatures are made of a semi-soft plastic that will come warped; you need to microwave a mug of water to get the miniatures in the right shape
- The Elf Hero and half of the Goblins & Orcs are female (pronouns in books and cards are made more neutral to account for this)
- There is a lack of a "Boss Orc" figure (one with a large sword with a notch in it) so you need to use one of the two Orcs with the a big sword
- The dice are normal-sized and made of plastic and the symbols are changed slightly and more depressed so the design wont fade as much (sadly, no more cute bunny heads)
- Zargon's screen is smaller but holds the same info
All-and-all, its the same old game with a considerable facelift but with a little more stuff added to add more options. The miniatures are so different from the old chunky Citadel miniatures that they don't look out of place amongst regular D&D minis (in the 28mm or 32mm scale), and the uniformed 1-itch/25mm grid mikes it more compatible with a lot of miniatures, battle-grid maps and vinyl mats out in the open market. And what HQ fan does not make use of things outside the (game) box, or use HQ game pieces as props for other games?
