a quick fix is to ditch the OD&D-Greyhawk paladin, and just give clerics edged weapons. Heck, crossbows are probably fine too given how limited their rate of fire is. I might still restrict them from using the "true" bows just to give fighters that extra rate-of-fire bonus over everyone else in missile combat. |

If you limit the Cleric to only using the kind of weapon their deity uses (perhaps with a "backup" option as well, like a ritual dagger or ceremonial mace) then you wind up with a character who is limited to only certain kinds of weapons that fit their alignment or religion--whereas the Fighter could use whatever weapons. I think that gives more the kind of flexibility/equipment advantage that suits the generalist fighter, while making the Cleric successful in a niche, but limited--kind of like a MU.

Paladins were really the second draft of the Cleric. ... redundant with the Cleric. .. the Cleric is, ... miracle-performing holy warrior in the vein of a fantastical Templar or Hospitaller ... So my thought is to try and replace the Cleric with the Paladin. So those are my thoughts. What are yours? My thought is that indeed, the Paladin is an attempt to make the Cleric more martial, as you said. But instead of replacing the Cleric with the Paladin, I would replace the Paladin with the Cleric. In the Cleric, we have everything we need for a holy warrior. Clearly, he is not a village priest -- he is a man (or, often, woman) of action. Who needs a Paladin when there is a real Cleric at hand? Give him the weapon that is holy to his deity, be it mace, sword, spear, or hammer, and be done with it. For ranged weapons, the sling is just as fine as the crossbow. The particular weapon does not really matter - he is weaker than the professional fighter in any case, but he has the mission that transcends the mere search for gold. |

I also like the idea of rebranding the cleric as a paladin. I would even go this far with it:
- Allow clerics access to all weapons just like fighters. However, fighters shoot bows twice and crossbows once per round, while all others shoot once/every other. Additionally, only fighters ever get full use out of magic weapons. Others only ever get +1, no matter how many pluses the weapon is rated as, unless it's a weapon specially limited to them.
- Allow clerics to have a paladin's laying on hands ability and something about a faithful steed because that's just D&D tradition.
- They are not priests. Priests are a type of NPC sage: in other words they are sages with religious and theological expertise, who may also know relevant spells from across all spell lists.
- Also, as a bonus, any particular character may call themselves a ranger by taking a -1 or -2 penalty to pretty much all rolls in wrought dungeons and towns, in exchange for the inverse bonus in the wilderness.
- As another bonus, while we're at it let's just roll the assassin's abilities into the thief class, and have a single MU class where you choose between MU spells, illusionist spells, cleric spells or druid spells.
