A new edition of The One Ring is coming out soon. The Kickstarter has already been fully funded. This edition will have Eriador as the default setting, as opposed to Rhovanion. The default year is 2965. Article

I saw this and am considering buying in. However, I already have a lot of 1E TOR stuff (which I don't use) and the 5E AiME books (which I like a lot) and so I can't decide how much I will benefit from getting 2E TOR (other than the fact that it looks so cool).
Also, I read something about how a 2E may be in the future for AiMe so I wonder if I should just wait for that.
Argh. Love Middle-earth and can't decide what to do about this KS.

The rules don’t excite me. I hope they reprint all the 1E TOR adventures as expediently as possible, but I worry that rules changes and art direction changes will surely slow or prevent this from happening. I am thinking of picking up the Starter Set, since the maps look nice, and it includes an adventure.

I would consider buying it, but I don't have a regular group at this time. I also don't feel like learning a new set of rules. I'm usually excited about learning new systems, but I haven't found anything in recent years that excites me.

I am thinking of picking up the Starter Set, since the maps look nice, and it includes an adventure. I decided to back the KS because everything that I've read suggests that the base rules will have very little change and the intent is to make everything backward compatible. As such, they are developing new regions instead of repeating older ones. (Just the opposite of D&D, I suppose.) I agree that the starter set looks nice. That was one of the factors that tipped the balance in favor of buying into the KS. In some ways I would have preferred to wait until they come up with AiME 2E, but I will probably end up with both. I like AiME more than TOR.

Has anyone played the game? I was wondering if the two editions were compatible. If so, it would expand the number of backgrounds for characters.

I have and you are correct. 2E has a bit of rewrite but is essentially 1E with different art and such. The designers said that their goal was to make certain that the old material would not be obsolete, and with that in mind they don't plan on duplicating old books right away. Instead, the plan is to focus on the Shire region and not the Wilderlands. As you noted, this is great from a "I don't have to rebuy a bunch of stuff" perspective. I had planned on getting rid of my TOR stuff last summer to open up shelf space, and I figured I would focus on AiME. As luck would have it, Free League announced TOR 2E right before I sold it all so I opted to keep it and purge other stuff from my shelves instead.

I haven't seen much of the game, but it looks like the style of play lends itself well to theater of the mind gaming. But it also sounds like you can use miniatures to help visualize combat. Here are a couple of ways to use terrain for your games. This one uses Terra Tiles: www.youtube.com/watch?v=74xLqUjt0x0This one uses the Ultimate Dungeon Terrain: www.youtube.com/watch?v=sxk09WcSYvsOf course, other types of terrain can be used, and the two mentioned work in other games. It's just that the videos explain how to use them in a TOR game.
