Before I ever saw a monster manual (or fiend folio) a kid in math class had a DMG and would let me look at it. I remember reading the monster listings in the back and it sparking my imagination...what's a Lurker Above? A trapper? A mimic? I was intrigued.

Same here. I had the PHB and DMG for about a year, I think, before I got my hands on the MM. At some point in between I got OD&D, so some of the monsters now had descriptions, but not knowing what a nightmare was didn't stop me from using them out of the DMG tables.

Same here, we were well into our B/X gaming period when one of the group showed up with a DMG. As well as intrigued, though, I think when I borrowed it and read through it was the point where I firmly banished all thought of ever moving to AD&D!
