Just heard about this and (in spite of the fact that it's rated ages 10+) it actually looks fun. dnd.wizards.com/products/tabletop-games/rpg-products-board-card-games/dd-adventure-beginsFour characters, four colored minis, four colored d20's. Character creation has more variety than I expected: (1) Pick a character (dwarf fighter, human sorcerer, dragonborn rogue, elven bard) (2) Set up the character using the pre-made cards ** Pick your appearance (two sided, so two to select from) ** Pick your personality (four to select from, each gives a special one-use power) ** Pick your combat tile (two to select from, each rated at level one and level two so you can advance along the way!) ** Choose a backpack card that tells you what equipment you have. There are several map tiles. Also, four Boss monsters to fight and that determines which tile is at the end. The other three are set up in random order, so the "game board" isn't exactly the same for each game. There are guardian monsters, I think, for each of the first tiles and then the Boss at the end. Each map tile has its own deck of cards that represent monsters or traps or whatever is found there. Looks like the deck is bigger than the number of stops on each tile, so you don't use all of them each game. The game uses a rotating DM method, and I always get to be first in my group because the oldest player goes first. The DM gets to roll the special black die when he does stuff. My first thought was, "way too young for me, I'd never play this" but I did watch the video at the link above and I'm thinking it could be a fun family game. Some complexity, some variety of options, clearly not as complex or variable as actual Dungeons & Dragons.

Family game day coming up soon, so I decided "what the heck" and ordered a copy of this. Maybe a waste of cash, maybe a fun game. I'll report back after I get a chance to play it.

So, Finarvyn how does it play? Had a chance to play it yet?

Still in shrink wrap. I may wait until my daughter visits at Thanksgiving because if she feels like I got it "for her" she might be more willing to play.

Sounds like a good plan

I'm not sure if it is or isn't a good plan, but it's what I have at the moment. I assume that if my gaming group really pushed hard enough they could convince me to break open the box now and not wait a month, but they usually pick D&D first and board games second so it's highly unlikely that they will pressure me to open it early.
As I noted earlier, I did watch the video and it looked fun. The narrator of the video put me off a little because he made it sound a little cheezy. Also, rather than rotate DMs I might go with 4 players plus a DM so that 5 could play instead of 4. Nice that they tried to make a DM-less experience, however.

Time will tell!
I agree, the narrator was strange, but I think this might be a nice board game experience for beginners or for in between sessions, or when suddenly some folks don't have time to show up.
