One thing I seen time and time again, are shops where there was one principle who was very creative like Dave Arneson, and other that was very good at working on the business side like Gygax. Many times but not always, problem will arise and I will say they echo the antidotes and accounts we hear about Arneson and Gygax. Including where the business savvy individual doesn't do as well later when the company is bigger and has more revenue. Well observed. In my limited experience, that's also roughly the kernel of every successful video game company, and performing band, that I've gotten to know.

That involves not getting fooled by Strawman debates - and it also involves keeping things real. Because the "Legend of Good Gary" will at this point only fuel a - honestly - pretty cruel counternarrative, and one that's as far from the truth as the previous, slightly oedipal exaggerations of Gygax' contributions were before. There you go. And as a result, the subject of Chainmail's influence cannot be moderately discussed because of Gygax's original claims. I don't think you have to take sides or be an expert to recognize my contentions, which I think others share without endorsing the extremes of Gygax's claims. 1. Chainmail is not only a wargame. It's also a Fantasy catalogue- a source book for the genre. 2. D&D is a game of exploration designed with an emphasis on combat. 3. Chainmail's finger prints are present throughout. From the earliest testimonies to the final published product.

So all the Gary-bashing is because Chainmail is in the header image? Chainmail is mentioned throughout OD&D, it doesn’t have to be more complicated than that. This is still an OD&D board, isn’t it?

It’s some severe topic drift, but the early draft cover in the third position branched out into a discussion of early games... I’d say “early versions of the rules”, but the question of whether there were any written rules for early Blackmoor games came into it.

And we have board sections devoted to Chainmail (along with other old TSR games). Whether Chainmail is part of a line of evolution or not, we have a number of games we discuss here and Chainmail is clearly part of that. If Warriors of Mars was on the board header I would be fine with it.

So all the Gary-bashing is because Chainmail is in the header image? No. "Gary-bashing" isn't quite the right term for it. A sober assessment that he was neither angel nor devil. Not the creative genius that made all things D&D, but still worthy of credit. Particularly the way he managed content. He was very good at selecting and compiling great ideas from throughout the swords & sorcery, fantastic literature, and wargaming fields. Not unlike Kevin Feige and George Lucas in that aspect. But also, he blew it all away and lost credibility by taking credit for everything. @rafael really crystalized it for me with equating Gary with " content managers and content developers" which summarizes Gary's role perfectly.
