Back in the early 80's (83? 84?) I was at miniFIGS convention in Ontario and a person was hawking a space RPG he had written. My friend brumbar, and I, both bought a copy (long since lost). It was a very rules -light game. I have been trying to track it down but have had zero success
I think the game was called Exploring Space, but that is such a generic title that my Google-fu is not working
Does this twig any memories in anybody?

I think you mean Star Explorer. I would describe it more as a board game with RPG elements, though.
But it is based on a proper RPG. Starships & Spacemen is the best game of exploring space that I know. You can get a copy from Dan Proctor. There is also a sandbox for it by Paul Kidd, called The Lucanii Drift. Great stuff.

The "Encylcopedia of Role-Playing Games" (http://darkshire.net/jhkim/rpg/encyclopedia/fulllist.html) lists something called "Small Space" which is apparently a spin-off of "Dinky Dungeons", which from what I can tell was pretty DIY.
