This came up last night on the Lean Coffee.
If there was a Cleric in Chainmail, what would it look like?

We ended up discussing which spells would make the battlefield level last night; I suppose we would wish to pout a little thought into what the numbers might look like in the “fantasy combat table”, the one that gives you a 2d6 roll to drive back or kill a specific fantasy creature...choose the default level (8th?), look at the combat equivalent (superhero minus 1, I think) and then adjust for other special abilities, e.g. better against undead than the equivalent fighter, etc.

Perhaps CM's "Religious Orders of Knighthood" are its nearest proto-clerical figures? This notion has pervaded my thinking in recent years and found its way into DD5. Apologies for the shameless "plug" but perhaps a couple of the CM-related footnotes are relevant here?

Cleric: fights as Wizard on FCT and as 3AF or 3MH in normal combat.
4 levels: Acolyte (-3) 0 spells, Priest (-2) 2 spells, Bishop (-1) 4 spells, Patriarch 6 spells
Spells: detection, light, protection from evil, bless, turn sticks to snakes, hold persons, insect plague, dispel (or anti-magic shell), raise dead (*finger of death- as lightning bolt).
Port over the 2d6 turn undead table from OD&D with the above levels and all "D" results equal to "T".
Boom! done.

On a charge move where melee is expected.

Great topic! I use Fighting Capability with CM-battles, a Bishop fights as Hero -1 etc. Same for Saving Throws. So basically only Bishop, Lama and Patriarch are allowed. Clerics have so few spells that I decided not to limit number of "slots". Bless spell is particularly powerful - can be a game changer.
