I completely forgot to post this here, but maybe one of you is interested. I'm part of a group that's running a Kickstart Campaign for an RPG (maga)zine, focussing on Old West rpgs. There are three days left on the deadline, and we haven't reached our goal yet, but we would appreciate your support!

Here's the problem with publishing a magazine. I had a scheme to do an old-school-style pulp magazine in the style of Weird Tales, Black Mask, Amazing Stories, Two-Fisted Tales, etc. I had commitments and contracts in place for the full first issue and was ready to go to Kickstarter...and half the authors (all industry names) just utterly failed to turn in their stories and articles. I then put up writers' guidelines and opened up general submissions to see if I could fill the slots. Nothing. And it seemed disingenuous to just fill it with my own writing . If you don't have content, you can't publish a magazine.

I actually did find the writer's guidelines and forwarded it to my son, who is working on a Masters degree in Creative Writing. (He's played D&D, Warhammer, C&C, and so on since he was old enough to hold dice.) He just didn't have time to submit anything. I wonder if the best model is to start as a simple PDF newsletter sort of like the old Strategic Review. Maybe a "house organ" with a few general RPG content if submitted. Keep it frequent and short. Ask for a minor cost to cover the issue, a buck or something like that. If it draws enough of an audience, then you think about actual printing. This coming from a person who has never actually done a newsletter.

I had an idea to create a Dragon-magazine-like issue that would let independent creators promote their own work, hyperlinks to their website & product. High quality layout and art on the interior. I painted an eye catching cover, got several people on board, several advertisers who only had to pay in "exposure" that is announce on their social media when the magazine was available...then when it came time to turn in the articles got zilch. I even suggested they didn't have to write new content, just do an excerpt from something cool in one of their games. Nada.

I mean Fight On did it about as well as you can and it only survived around 13 issues. It takes a lot of time and energy to make these things for little to no reward.

Which tbh is really sad because there's something that's pure awesome as getting a copy of a quarterly fiction or gaming rag in the mail with a variety of new content. Digital/self-publishing is a great opportunity for people, but it loses a great deal in the end-reader experience.

There is something about opening it up and discovering the unexpected along with the familiar in each issue. Alas, these are from a bygone era. Like the Sears catalog.
