Going for a noir weekend, with listening to Murakami's "Trilogy of the Rat", and rewatching "True Detective" (season 1, only).
Hoping for a day of rain. As one might well suspect, I love little things more than rainy days, gloomy brother that I am. -_-

I do like a rainy day once in awhile, good excuse not to go out of the house Time to return to the basics, listening to an excellent unabridged audiobook of "The Lord of the Rings" I had left off listening at the Council of Elrond, now I have gotten to Galadriel's mirror and the Fellowship are leaving Lothlorien. I have a lot of Tolkien stuff I want to read, especially his writings about Beowulf, the Death of Arthur etc. First I am going to read these though.

Going full nerdy manchild this weekend, with Michael Williams' "Weasel" novels for Dragonlance. Wanted to red them since forever - like, since middle school - and never quite got there. In this context - can someone please help me find any audiobooks recording of, really, any work of David Gemmell? I have to commute so d**n long some of these days, and I think I need something easy and phantastical for the road.

I just finished Dan Jones' The Wars of the Roses, his follow-on to The Plantagenets. The original British title, The Hollow Crown, really fits better, since the book covers nearly all of the 15th Century and a little at the start of the 16th Century. A good narrative history.

Not reading, but watching Bosch, season 2. As is now well established on this board, I am a sucker for all things noir. - Not because I'd let the genre influence me all too much, on whatever level, but because it's the sort of stories that do not come natural to me.

I need to check Bosch out, since I'm a fan of noir as well.

Hieronymus Bosch's paternal half-brother is Mickey Haller AKA "The Lincoln Lawyer." In Michael Connelly's latest Bosch book, The Crossing, "Harry" helps his brother "Mick" defend a client against a murder rap. I heard this story on audiobook. It's narrated by Titus Welliver---the same actor who plays Bosch on the Amazon Prime series. What's funny is when Welliver does the voice of Mick, it sounds like he's impersonating Matthew "alright alright alright" McConaughey---who played Mick in the movie, The Lincoln Lawyer!

Hehehe, nice, thanks! Yeah, I got into Michael Connelly through the McConaughey movie. Also started the Bosch series, as audiobooks, a while ago, but I am still with the first ones.
Overall, a pretty well-done series, doing a good balance between plot- and character-development. Nothing otherworldly, and sometimes outright poorly structured, but entertaining. The movie and the TV series, though, highly above-average crime procedurals. I hope - and since the series is a matter of prestige to Amazon - that we'll eventually see a crossover starring McConaughey.
As to Bosch's season 2, what I've watched from it, aaah, simply the best cop show currently available.
Otherwise, going to get really educated on SCRUM this weekend, even though I am not a programmer. Bleh. -_-

Bloodstone by Karl Edward Wagner. Alien ruins half sunken in a swamp, degenerated toadmen, a godlike crystal being from beyond the stars - its like something from the works of Abraham Merritt. The main character Kane is warrior and sorcerer and reminds me of both Conan and Elric. But if he showed up in one of their adventures he'd be an antagonist, like Thoth-Amon or Theleb K'aarna. I like it quite a lot!

The Burma Campaign by Frank Lynn. A history of this mostly forgotten theater of war.
Echoes 30 by Tom Johnson and friends. A collection of essays commemorating the 30th anniversary of this great pulp fiction fan magazine.
Ramsey Campell, Probably. Another set of essays, from the prominent British horror writer.
Black Friday by David Goodis. A bleak crime-suspense novel.
The End of the Drive by Louis L'amour. From a file of unpublished Westerns found after the writer's death.

I compiled a rather long list of books - or rather, a compilation of several series - that I see as interesting reads for anybody interested in my humble efforts concerning the World of Meleon: www.goodreads.com/review/list/6841996-rafael?shelf=meleon-mordred-blackmoor(Note that their inclusion in the list doesn't particularly say what, or if I particularly liked the books I named - it's just that I think they transport a similar "flair", from my own POV.) Like, it's amusing how many of those I really read as a kid. Guess RPGs are really the gateway to that "child identity" of me that still lingers around somewhere in my subconscious. I rarely read fantasy books, any more, and, particularly in terms of style, I have completely different rolemodels - but when it's about fantasy, straight to the 1980s I go.

I wanted to point out these 4 new Marvel Comics freebies on Comixology: * Zeb Wells is a writer for Robot Chicken. I read the Avenging Spider-Man: My Friends Can Beat Up Your Friends TPB, which collects Avenging Spider-Man #1--5. It's FUNNY! You should at least get issue #1, because it's free. It starts with NYC under attack by the moloids, and this great quote from a gun-toting J. Jonah Jameson:

Strongly recommend the Vision & Scarlet Witch. Mantlo was getting better and better before he was cut down, and I would have loved to see his progress continue.

Nice, though I am not sure it works as a comic book, to be frank. The story is not great, but the imagery and the acting are quite entertaining. Not brilliant, but good enough fun.

Interface by Mother Horse Eyes: www.reddit.com/r/9M9H9E9/wiki/narrativeIts kind of like if HP Lovecraft David Cronenberg and William S Burroughs cowrote a creepy pasta. Its weird scifi horror with multiple naratives that weave in and out of each other. Some parts are written in the style of message board posts (in the same way as part of a novel can be in the style of a letter or diary), while other parts are more explicitly litterary.

Castle Richmond by Anthony Trollope. An early novel, and not one of his best. It was hard to feel very concerned about the romantic entanglements of the Anglo-Irish aristocracy when the novel had the great famine of the 1840s occurring in the background.
Cassidy's Girl by David Goodis. Another bleak, tough crime-suspense novel from Goodis.
The Atlantic Abomination by John Brunner. A Cthulhuesque entity rises from the sea floor and invades North America. Read like a B-movie from the 1950s and 60s--one of the good ones!
The Compleat Traveller in Black by John Brunner. Brunner in a much different mood; a series of connected fantasy tales in a setting that would make for a great RPG campaign.
