Sadly, the scan for Chimaera 68 is not complete! And the Pits of Cil content for that issue is missing. Can someone contact the site manager and see if he can fix this?
Great job Zulgyan, thanks so much.
I had a look at no. 68 and I don't think you have to worry about any missing information as it says the Pits of Cil report "is held over until next issue."

The modified equipment list (page 14 of the pdf) includes not only a standard Flask of Oil (2 gp), but also a Flagon of Oil (4 gp) and a Fire Bomb (5 gp).

Thank you! The Chimaera fanzines are one of the best available documents of early OD&D play, and although the Ryth Chronicle is somewhat more informative, there is a lot of very neat knowledge hidden in these articles. It is a fun look into the hobby, and the games people were playing in the 1970s.

This is really great, thanks for putting it together Zulgyan. The modified equipment list (page 14 of the pdf) includes not only a standard Flask of Oil (2 gp), but also a Flagon of Oil (4 gp) and a Fire Bomb (5 gp). :o He notes on p. 21 that he meant 'Flagon of Wine' with the funny aside "No wonder my bloody lanterns wouldn't work!".

This is an interesting document. Does anyone know publication dates for this stuff? I would guess the 1970's, but a quick look at the files didn't show any dates.

I think the Pits of Cil started about Issue 9 of Chim, but I’m going off of faulty memory here. You could check here: www.diplomacyzines.org.uk/library/zine_pages/Chimaera.htm

Glancing through this PDF - am I right that this does not contain the 10 page "Pits of Cil" rulebook (with "Welcome to My World" on the cover)? If not, I can probably furnish a scan to add on to this.

That would be neat. At what point were they put out? The campaign reports are full of rule revisions, rulings, and clarifications.
I was just reading through a later article (part xxx) that was making reference to a bad review of the "new" Basic Set (Holmes). Off to look at the full zine to read it.

derv : Thanks for the heads up. I came across that once before - I recall the pseudonym "Joe Cool" - but had forgotten about it. Let me know if you find the issue with actual the "Joe Cool" review. The pages referencing it in the compilation don't actually appear with CIL #XXX so I'm having trouble locating them or the article they are referring to. I did just find a short (3 paragraph) review of the Holmes Set by Dave Tant (the guy running CIL) in CIL #XIX, titled "New Rule Book". This is in Chimaera #38, Jan 1978. It references the release at Games Day, which was when the first UK printing debuted. He is positive: "It really is well written and solves all sorts of problems left unanswered by the first edition". A longer contemporary zine review can be found in Gallimaufrey #12 (Jan 1978), which I transcribed here.

The pages referencing it in the compilation don't actually appear with CIL #XXX so I'm having trouble locating them or the article they are referring to. It's in issue 48 page 7-8. Basically Joe Cool states a number of common criticisms we have all heard before over the years. Some of them are valid, others are belly aches. He does start out the review with a couple positive things to say and the review is followed by a mild rebuff by, I'm guessing, editor Clive Booth. These zines are great in that they give you a snap shot of not just what was going on with D&D, but Traveller, EPT, etc.

derv : thanks, I found it! I wonder who Joe Cool was... I would think it was written by one of the players in the campaign, but hard to say. BTW, there were a few follow up letters to the review in issue 52, Jan. 1979, p. 13-14 by a Rich Sealey, Rich Bartle, and Lew Pulsipher. increment I found references by Tant to the "Welcome to my World" rules you mentioned. It seems they were printed some time around issue 36 Nov. 1977. This would have been part XVII of the campaign.

Yes, glancing at it actually I think the information is largely the same as the rules given in PoC #1 and #2 - a bit expanded and organized. I'll get a scan of it together.

It seems like the kind of lengthy review that could have run in White Dwarf, which (if I am remembering correctly) did not ever review of Holmes Basic in its Open Box column. I read the follow up letters after reading the original (Zulgyan included them in the compilation). I remember reading the Pulsipher one before and IIRC I even contacted him to see if he had corresponded with Holmes. I think it was a negative although I can't find his reply at the moment (it may have been on G+).

Thank you ! - love reading about the sessions and the house rules - I knew my old DM got his mule-handling rule from somewhere ! Dp someone still have a copy of that document ? Interesting that in the rule summary, morale rolls apply to PCs. It's in Chainmail line, but EPT explicitely suggest the reverse.

The compiled doc I'm not sure of, but this 10 pager is still a valid link: And Chimaera mags can be found here: diplomacyzines.co.uk/?page_id=574Not sure that helps though.

Sadly, Zulgyan, the dropbox file seems to have been deleted. Any chance of getting up a new link to the file? Also, the link that Jon Peterson put up for the rules booklet also doesn't work. I'm interested in looking at both of those documents. Any time spent would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
