I think that 10 years after Disney releases its last Star Wars movie, Rogue One will be widely regarded as the sole gem of the lot. Could be, actually. Though, really, "Solo" was the more charming piece, I think. But "Rogue One", at least not a catastrophe, and the story, if cheesy, made sense. Interesting, cause I thought Rogue One was much better, the only really solid Star Wars movie since 1983, and that Solo was incredibly cheesy and utterly lacking in charm. It's just interesting how two people can see the same two films and have polar opposite reactions. I think one of the best things Disney did was ditch the entire expanded universe. The novelizations really jumped the shark when they decided Boba Fett escaped the sarlacc. I've heard good things about some of the novels, especially the Thrawn trilogy, but it was too much baggage and in the end most people don't care. Or at least I don't really care so much - the prequels knocked the franchise off the pedestal long ago and released me of the burden of obsessive nerdom (for Star Wars, at least). The only SW thing I hold as sacred these days is the original film.

I seen Solo since the last time I posted here, and it was great! Han and Lando were spot-on.
I re-watched The Last Jedi and I still enjoyed it. That Yoda scene is the best Star Wars moment I seen in a long time. (Such a short profound scene being a powerful cleanser from all that ugly Prequel Yoda.)
I also re-watched Rogue One. No matter how many times I seen it, my mind does not give a d**n about the main characters to even bother remembering their names. The only thing I enjoyed about Rogue One was the Battle of Scarif, and Darth Vader totally murdering EVERYONE at the end.
OH YEAH! At San Diego Comicon, there was a trailer for this:
The audience's cheers over the news was heard even outside the convention center! I'm glad it returning, as its honestly the only good thing that came of the dreadful prequels.

It's just interesting how two people can see the same two films and have polar opposite reactions. The main difference here is that I've always liked the SWEU; the "Solo" movie is, in many ways, and perhaps even coincidentally, a love letter to the "(Young) Han Solo" novels by A. C. Crispin. - Those are not "great", but "alright", I guess. And so, plot and characters are something that I am predisposed to like. The same the R1 was not a terrible movie - but, judging from the title, I had expected some-X-Wing-related action, and was quite bummed that we got, ugh, and-here-I-go-deep, "The Wishsong of Shannara" in space. In retrospect, I also think that R1 will be regarded as the best of the (early?) Disney movies, if only because it added to the original continuity in a substantial way. "Solo", even as a Crispin adaptation, is far from how good it could really have been. R1 is less charming, IMO, but a more competent movie.

One thing about "Rogue One" that I liked a lot was the wealth of fun characters. I really liked the assassin droid, and it was neat to see some "not really jedi but somehow channeling the force a little" guys. This stuff would have fit in well with a WEG Star Wars RPG campaign in the 80's, had the movie been out at that point.

Took me a lot of time to warm up to this series, and I am not really a fan - however, I can see the appeal, and I hope this becomes something that, ugh, doesn't give me headache. ...An example of what gives me terrible headache: ...Before any SWJ diagnoses any hidden racism , Lando always was my favorite character, before Wedge, Luke and Han. Why? - Because of the Black Fleet Crisis, of course! ...Though that is really more of something of a discussion for the Beggar's Canyon. Both Rose and Fin, though, are written so poorly, they are - so far - impossible to like. This is saddening for the actors, because John Boyega and Kelly Tran both rock. ...But those scenes... What were people smoking in the writers room, for the cat's sake?

I think there was talk of a longer version that would have included a couple of deleted scenes, but Ryan (?) Johnson (?) flat-out refused, or something. Whatever there is currently going on with the content creators and their fans, it's really some remarkably bad mojo.

My guess is that Disney will reevaluate after Ep IX. If people love it, then they may have hit on something. If people like it less than TLJ or Solo, I imagine there will be a lot of internal shakeup.

Okay. Spoilers…
Almost relentlessly hitting the fangasm button. “Every generation…” from the TPM trailer!* Lando! Leia’s Theme! Palpatine!
SO many “undos” of TLJ. Rey has Luke’s original lightsaber back. She also has her original outfit and hairdo, looks like. Kylo Ren's helmet is back. No sign of any character or story element from TLJ (other than Luke being dead, of course—can’t “undo” that one).
* and no other element from the Prequels that I can tell.
I dunno, I feel it, but I’m also still numb from TLJ. It will be a visual treat, and it will hit all the right notes, but I don’t know if I will ever accept it as canonical.

Yeah, I share that sentiment: The movie might well turn out to be okay - whatever; it doesn't look bad, at least. Now, that's not really a unique selling point in the age of dragons on TV, and superheroes nuking entire cities. But my personal attachment to the new trilogy - apart from the aspect that it's an interesting popular event - is non-existing, at this point.
Might well sit this one out. The nerdrage I felt over the last one, unhealthy.

I can't sit this one out. It's Star Wars, darnit. I've loved SW since the 1970's and so I'll have to go watch the thing at least one time to at least get a look at where the story goes. I don't like the prequel trilogy much, but I saw 'em all at the theater on opening weekend. Also, it's something that I can share as a family event where my wife and kids get together to watch Star Wars movies.
Also, I have to say that I liked the Princess Leia theme music in the trailer. I love the fact that John Williams made different themes for various characters in the original movie, and it's neat that they are re-using some of that stuff instead of composing something that might fall flat and be totally non-memorable.
Having Lando back seems to be a plus.
Other than that, the trailer was sort of a dud. Rey taking on a TIE fighter type ship…? Huh.

Yeah, why the heck didn’t that TIE fire its laser canons? Actually, the more I think about it, I think they are going to bring back Luke in some way. They’re bringing back Palpatine as well, to justify it; probably others, too. Notice R2 wasn’t in the trailer. Again… neither cheering nor putting it down, just kind of hard to care because it really seems like fudging, now.

Due to the over-hype of the prequels, the mediocre filmography of J.J. "Mystery Box" Abrams, and Hollywood's need to dumb-down American films for the Chinese market, I'm keeping my expectations really low. Mind you, I'm still going to watch it.
Also, I hope Emperor Palpatine's appearance is a flashback or a Force Ghost manifestation as I loath the idea of Palpatine pulling a Darth Maul on the Death Star II.

[soapbox] I have to say that one thing that really bothers me is the way movies and TV shows treat character death. Death in real life is a highly traumatic thing and death in movies and TV is often a cheap plot device followed by a "just kidding" and a bunch of high-fives. Like the way they killed Wash in Serenity after all of the action ended. [Um … spoiler?] Rather than killing characters they should have them go off somewhere and leave the option of return. [/soapbox]

I rather liked Rogue One and Solo. But for me there is no "rethinking things" on Disney's part that can save VII, VIII and - I think - IX. To those that liked the sequels I can only say I'm happy for you, go for it!

I think what we're going to see is an eventual opening of SW to smaller projects - like is already done with the different TV series that are in production. I HOPE that this will eventually get us to a point where we might see the old EU pop up in some form - be it through animated movies, or project like the German "Thrawn Trilogy" audioplays from a few years ago. - I get that Disney wants to move on to keep the brand relevant, but at this point, they have established their new continuity, and are likely well aware of its limits. So, if smaller projects continue to make money, they might make sense to them, as well.

To me, there are four “main” Star Wars films: - Star Wars
- Empire
- Jedi
- The Force Awakens
This is for the simple reason that I choose to think of Star Wars not primarily as a universe, and not as a ponderous, multi-generational saga, but simply as the space adventures of Luke Skywalker and Han Solo. I can’t include TLJ or Solo, because their portrayals of their respective titular characters don’t ring true. But TFA was a success in its portrayal of Han Solo—and an all-around great film. So, all the other films are, to me, spinoffs. Worth a watch; but ultimately forgettable. Which brings us to Episode 9. The title and the trailer go to great lengths to convince you it’s part of the “main” story, but unfortunately these connections seem forced. I have to just consider it yet another spinoff, this time about the characters Rey and Finn from TFA, having more TFA-like adventures, and hope it succeeds on that level.

If you want a top 4 list I'm just curious why you didn't include Rogue One, as I see R1 as "Episode IVa" and ANH as "Episode IVb." Seems like Rogue One fits the cycle better than Force Awakens just because you could walk away from RotJ and feel satisfied. My list might be... 1. Rogue One 2. Star Wars 3. Empire 4. RotJ Not a final say, understand. Mostly brainstorming as I type.....

It's just Kylo and Rey training toghether it seams. That’s hard to swallow, since we’ve already been jerked around with a false redemption arc for Kylo Ren, and by now he’s such a foul bastard who has done so much evil that I don’t care for him and Rey to be teaming up anymore in any way. Also, how many movies are these people going to spend training?

This video is worth sitting through. Personally, I think we're going to see a lot of borrowings from "Dark Empire", a comic book sequel to the original trilogy that was released parallel to the Thrawn novels in the early 90s, but doesn't take place in the same continuity. Most notably, though, "Dark Empire" has been cited over and over by anyone involved with the sequel trilogy as a model for the new movies. Now, givne that the very trailer already hints at the return of a certain evil character, I'm going to assume that things take a similar course, with the next-gen characters in place of the classic heroes.

I've often wondered why The House of Mouse simply hasn't remade the original SW/ESB/RotJ trilogy. They've certainly shown they aren't shy about redoing even their most beloved classics. I'm not saying this is a good thing, but given their recent trend I've still wondered about it. I've often wondered about this. When Lucas went back to redo his own original trilogy, the special effects added still lagged behind other movies of that time, and so I've never liked the way it turned out. Seems like a reboot with a new, young group of actors could be an interesting concept. Of course, they'd likely change stuff along the way and we may dislike the final product, but so many other franchises seem to get a reboot so why not Star Wars?

I think they will do this eventually, once enough time has passed. Right now while some of the original actors are still alive is a good time to do sequels. Later on they'll reboot the original trilogy in a way that they can make more movies with the new actors.
