Hey all: Bloodmaster Lawson B., co-author of the famous Tomb of the Sea Kings is going to be refereeing his module at 9pm Central this Friday Feb 16. He will be offering it on his Twitch channel: twitch.tv/Bloodmastr Here is Bryce Lynch's review over at 10 foot pole. I was a part of the original pre-publication play-test and I am running it myself for my monthly "Date Night D&D" sessions: I cannot recommend it more highly. This is pure original edition fun-house, on fire but not consumed -- while on hallucinogenic sage and mushrooms. So enjoy. Fight on!

I will be running this on Saturday 8/25/18 @7pm at Dragonflight CON in Bellevue WA
Tomb of the Sea Kings, LL/AEC (Basic D&D circa 1981) Get your game on like it's 1981! A classic old school funhouse dungeon crawl takes you to a forbidden island. Get rich & famous or die tryin'! For a mixed party character lvls 6-9. Pre gens will be provided. Will be using the Labyrinth Lord ruleset with AEC (which allows for race+class like 1e Ad&d)

scalydemon, that is awesome. Let us know how it goes. I’ve been running it more campaign style for my monthly date night D&D. I’ve named NPCs and created connected back stories and we are having a blast. Fight on!

Thanks, what I am trying to decide is, since it is a 4 hour one shot how to work it. Skip to second level where they have a chance at finding the sword? Or getting rid of the sword plot and going with other motivation..

Or getting rid of the sword plot and going with other motivation.. I think the first level would be more fun for a funhouse one off. Maybe you could make it about clearing out the vampire or something.

Well, my game is already 'sold out' with over a month until it happens so that is good.
I like your idea. A 'monster hunt' sounds more fun than the lame hook/intro in the adventure and the sword thing. I need to sit down and re read the adventure and try and print the maps in a larger size somehow.

Well, my game is already 'sold out' with over a month until it happens so that is good. I like your idea. A 'monster hunt' sounds more fun than the lame hook/intro in the adventure and the sword thing. I need to sit down and re read the adventure and try and print the maps in a larger size somehow. Well, I didn't think the set up was "lame," so much as kind of underdeveloped. I think they were trying to make up a simple Convention hook. I've done some work on it to fit it into my campaign. I studied the folks in the dungeon and kind of ranked them by power. Some of them are named in the module but some of the most powerful ones are not named. I also took a quick inventory of the magical treasure and ranked it. I determined that the most powerful magical item was NOT the magic sword, but the Crown of Chronthurung (or however they spell it). So I made it that both Faltor Pan and the Lych on the second level were vying against the evil cultists in order to reclaim the crown. I made the vampire a friend of the Lych. I made the evil bishop in the hour glass room angry at his evil high priest master and possibility "convertible," to the PC's cause. I made the spriggan and the magician on the first level in league with each other to keep the vampire at bay. I made the magic user on the first floor desirous of finding the lych in order to become a necromancer himself -- and therefore willing to help the party find him. I made the Ur King of the Sea Kings the father of the Lych. He was defeated by Faltor Pan in ancient days and humiliated -- driving his young son into exile. Faltor Pan became obsessed with discovering the whereabouts of the Lych in order to seal his own authority over the wilder lands once ruled by the sea kings. The search for the sword is a ruse. He is using it in order, he hopes, to find information about the Lych from the party so that he can attack and seal his doom. The lych wants to use the party to lure Faltor Pan down there and take him out. They all want the Crown for power against each other. And the Tree God's treasure. And the powers of the Tree God cult. Etc. It becomes complicated in a lovely and manageable way but keeps the players on their toes. I scattered clues to all these things throughout the dungeon and in the form of rumors and legends they receive from high-powered allies when they are back in the village/town/city. Clues in rooms include, for example, the hieroglyphs in the Egyptian-style room on the first level, etc. Correspondence, notes, etc. It has been fun. The combination of real campaign connection, scooby-do who-done it with some complexity, and the general fun-house will-I-push-this-button-? feel of the whole place has made it a big hit. What I have done, for a campaign, however, would NOT work for a one-off at a convention. That is why I suggested the vampire as a hook and focus. And you especially can't have the sword as the hook if you are sticking to the first floor. But perhaps the various anti-vampire amulets could be just slightly powered-up and turned into a good treasure-based hook for the CON. Something like: "You learn that there are mighty amulets against undead down in the Tombs of the Sea Kings. But, you are warned, the tombs are guarded not only by the ghosts of some of those restless kings, but also by a mighty vampire!" Then you could power up the vampire a bit if you needed to. I also added some ghoul servants to make him scarier to a party of 6 lvl 5 characters. Etc. Anyway, I know you are going to have fun and I look forward to a play report. Fight on!

Just a follow up note to say that I did run this Saturday eve at Dragonflight Con here in the Seattle area. Had a full 8 person table. Was a ton of fun. Went with the monster hunt Vampire angle and gave the party cleric 3 wooden stakes and a large garlic clove to start. It was set in Hyboria with a thousand year old omniscient Lord Gaxmoor in a Hawaiian shirt, spectacles and a goatee, and Thoth Amon involved in the hook.
Spoiler:
They never got to the vampire in room 15 but were instead all killed by summoning Zeus into the magic mirror beforehand. It timed out well as the 4 hour session was up. I ran it with B/X pregens lvls 6-9 so replaced geographically the rotoscope dragon room to below the mummy room and made it into green sunglasses and a green dragon to bump the challenge.
