We do have a small base there to observe the system and watch the border. It was significantly down staffed ten years ago as resources have become tighter. It at best gets one or two ships a year visiting. "Any chance we could get jump tapes to get us there?" Henry asks. "And would they be able to get us more to either return here or continue on elsewhere, depending on how things turn out? "We'd be happy to take along any small lots of supplies, or personal messages, that sort of thing."

Well, you could check with Captain Sneddeger and see if he could cut you a jump cassette, however, he would not be able to cut you a return cassette. [ooc] You sense an indifference to your request - 7 on the reaction roll.

OOC: Maybe we'd better learn if Bastinadi has any defenses. I get the feeling they may have a few weapons they can use against unauthorized starships.

Logan heads for the Merchant's Guildhall. He wants to check the bulletin board there for people looking for a berth. If he finds someone looking for a berth with Computer skills listed, he'll let the others know and arrange to meet with this person. If there isn't a listing, Logan will post one, "Wanted for ship board position, Computer Expert. Standard rates or will discuss a profit sharing arrangement."
OOC: Have we got a name for our ship?

OOC: Have we got a name for our ship? Some more logistical considerations before seeking passengers and cargo. If you get a jump cassette for Bastinadi, you can either get a J-2 directly there or a J-1 to Cheapside and then a J-1 to Bastinadi. But you also don't have the Jump-2 program (which needs Computer-2, Pilot-2, and Navigator-2 to write (which you would easily do if you got your computer guy). Each program takes at least a week to write (Jump-2 requires an 11+ roll, your Computer-3 guy would get +1 to the roll and Generate requires a 10+). So if you do the software writing, you will probably be spending several weeks writing programs... You could also try and get a jump cassette for Bastinadi at Cheapside. In the meantime, you go ahead and post for the computer position, there is no immediate response, you may need to wait some time.

I think we should go the jump 1 route. Get a cassette for Cheapside and another there for Bastinadi.
That gives us two weeks in jump during which our creative team can work on the Generate software. (Not much else to do in jumpspace...)

(Not much else to do in jumpspace...) Of course there would still be the issue of getting a jump cassette from Cheapside. There's also a Naval base at Merkab, maybe you could figure out how to get a jump cassette there.

Folks, I don't think we have a clear route to Bastinadi at the moment and no other leads to Janet Smythe.
Why don't we look at doing something else? There is still that rumor of the business man:
A business man, Sedek Aduni, is seeking passage to Koradin and then accompaniment there while he conducts inspections of his corporation's processing plants.
Want to see about going after that job?

Zeb asks the professor, "What do you know about Bastinadi? Any information would help. You said you don't know a lot about it, but do you know anyone who may help us learn more about that place?"

Well you could always check at the Scout Base, and there might be information to be found in our library here. Let me also chat around some of the other departments, perhaps there is someone with more knowledge. It would be interesting to go to Bastinadi and look for information there.

Henry's still at the Scout base, right? I'm sure they wouldn't mind me using their library to look the place up.
(And if I'm kept in the loop on this stuff, I'll look up psionics, also. Even the rumor and hearsay about it might contain a valuable clue.)

Even the rumor and hearsay about it might contain a valuable clue.) Yea, you can use the Scout Base library. Bastinadi is ruled by a small cadre of priests. The world has a small population which are mostly relegated to TL 3. While it appears that there is no law, this isn't entirely true. The bulk of the population handles disputes among themselves with the priests only becoming involved if things get out of hand. The priesthood and their supporters are a small enough group that they are unable to project much power, yet they control access to the star port. Travellers can easily get weapons out of the star port. The population has been in decline since The Imperium has pulled back and trade dropped to almost zero. After the pull out, a small Scout station was left in orbit with a small crew, with automation, the station is capable of the required maintenance work for Scout ships. The star port used to be a Class-C but due to lack of support, the repair facilities have been closed, with most of the repair workers having abandoned the world.

I'll assume some research at the university also, and I'm going to take a bit of liberty to move things along. The librarian is reluctant to allow non-university folks poke around, but Zeb slips him a 10cr note (Bribery 7+1). Zeb finds a sheet of notes left in a book on Bastinadi that suggests the theocratic oligarchy is a psionic priesthood. Apparently this information was closely guarded. Reading the pages in the book near where the note was tucked in is a description of some of the practices. The professor reads them and suggests they sound like some psionic testing and training rituals.
Albert (the professor) talks to some of his colleagues and it turns out that a student of Professor of Religious Studies Elwyn Latimer was studying the Bastinadi relgion a few years ago, unfortunately, he ran out of money and had to drop out. His name is Lukasz Malewski.
Albert also mentions a friend passed on a job posting from the merchant guild that your friend Logan is seeking a computer specialist. He himself is quite skilled with programming, usually writing programs to make correlations with sociological data, but he'd love to try his hand at more technical coding.

Mother is able to line up these possibilities:
High Passengers: 3 Mid Passengers: 3 Low Passengers: 6 (you could take 1 in the medical bay if you wanted) Available cargoes are: 15 ton, 15 ton, 20 ton, 30 ton Speculative Cargo: 25 tons of Electronic Parts at 80,800 cr per ton (I have applied the 1% surcharge for breaking up the lot since you can't take or afford a 25 ton cargo)
You will actually have another week to seek cargo while the Generate program is written if you want to see what else comes up for speculation.

Do we need a Nav-4 for the Generate program, I'm not looking at my books, but I think that's right. So, Victor will have to roll to improve his level, right?

Zeb is able to track Lukasz Malewski down (Streetwise 9 + 1). He lives near the Lombard Clinic and works in a coffee shop as a barista.

Sharron tags along with Zeb. Those baristas can get downright sociopathic. OOC: I'm still mulling over what Mother is going to do with the trade goods info... it of course depends on where we end up going.

Are folks waiting for something from me? Or are we just in a summer slump? I think we're all sort of waiting for Ronin84 to say "yay or nay" on trying to get Nav-4. If he says no, or fails in his roll, and we don't come up with Generate some other way, my vote is to pick someplace we *can* go and move along.

Ok, hmm, let me just assume Ronin84 will try the experience program for Victor... Roll 5 +1 DM for Education 8 fails... We probably should have done that awhile ago, I kept waiting for Ronin to chime in... The only other options to pursue in that direction is finding another Navigator-4, finding someone to buy the Generate program for you, or finding someone else who could generate the necessary jump cassettes... I suggest you look for other directions for now, and come back to this search later...

So Bastinadi is out for now? Should we try to get more info on it anyway? It's still on the to-do list, after all.
