When you say "Bath-esque", do you mean you were running a Hyborian age campaign using historical cultures? Sound pretty swanky/boss/epic (or whatever phrase it is that kids use these days).

I'm running a campaign with multiple political entities that hosts multiple RPG groups, wargame scenario/campaigns and anything else I can throw in there including personas from each who have yearly/seasonal events that affect them. Tony Bath in my inspiration for doing this.

Swell, this is right in the bullseye regarding my own interests. I'll definitely listen to these.

Yep, was inspired by the folks who talked about streaming - said podcasting was super easy. So I thought I'd give it a try. So far, it's a blast! Hey, how'd your personal attempt at doing some cool things with Chainmail go? I know we had our game and that was a lot of fun, but I thought you were trying other things with it too. How'd that go?

I just listened to Season 1 Episode 2 - Starting a Sandbox Campaign - Part 1, which for some reason is listed as podcast "1" in iTunes. Nice job! It makes me want to create a vast world in two hours. The advice and presentation of it were well done. And, not to sound too weird, but you have a good podcast voice. This matters. It's like rock and roll. The band can be great in every way, but if the lead singer's voice annoys you, it's tough to get past that.

Hey, how'd your personal attempt at doing some cool things with Chainmail go? Chainmail is still my go to system for mass combat with D&D. Mechanics-wise, you pretty much experienced how I use it in Battered Empires. I use the Mass Combat Table exclusively at both 1:10 and 1:1. The main thing I do different than the Fantasy Supplement is I rate figures by HD. Over time I've become more accustomed to what player's tend to do when there are large battles and I've adjusted my expectations of the rules. So, in really large actions, they might function as commanders or leaders, depending on the characters level. If they want to act independently of the larger engagement, I'll let them. But, it will normally involve switching to a 1:1 situation that I'll resolve along side the larger conflict. It can be risky. PC's will not be slaughtering units of men with a single die roll. Alone, they chance being encircled. A party of PC's can generally do fairly well with normal units though. Same thing applies for magic affects- 1:1 scale. If this happens, I spend more time with what the characters are doing at 1:1 and speed up resolutions with the larger battle. Truthfully, players tend to stick to commanding forces when put in the situation. Sometimes I'll use some command control rules under these circumstances. It just adds a little unpredictability. I've become much looser with movement and facing as well. Hey, you've got a whole other series of pod casts in the wings- talk about the different systems you've used. Chainmail, Hordes of Things, Chaos Wars, Book of War, Battle System, War Machine- likes/ dislikes, successes/ fails. I'm tuned in. Your gaming interests seem to match my own. I'm sure you'll be talking about something that interests me.

I think your system would be great fun for a weekend long campaign - we probably could have done Battered Empires in a weekend face to face. I will be talking about how I incorporated mass combat. I ended up using Book of War far more than I used Chainmail. My Fellowship adaptation has worked really well. That's a great idea for a future episode - comparing mass combat techniques, since I've used all of the ones you named, except for War Machine. Nice to hear from you, derv! Have a Happy Holidays!

I listened to the first four episodes today, and I like what I hear.
Topics that would be of interest to me personally: integrating wargaming into your RPG campaign (something I've thought about myself), more on running/managing sandboxes, and maybe an episode or to on your dungeon-mastering style, techniques and procedures and why you do/use those styles/techniques/procedures.
Thanks for doing this, and I look forward to future 'casts.

Thanks for the welcome! A brief pause to do some great life stuff, but back in the saddle again. I try to keep them as close to 20 min as I can, so that should fit just fine with your commute. I hope you enjoy and please let me know what you think?

So far, so good! Finished ep 3.
-The zero one was nice, to know what is this about. -First was a little...off, for me. I took long to figure your apocalyptic game was a medieval one, so i went far away in my mind. Also, i would like to hear more exemples of what you were discussing (or that was in the first one? i heard all of them in 3 days, so i may be confusing). -2 , 3 and 4: those were very cool! lots of good ideas , easy to adapt to our own games.
Im loving so far. Wish you could talk about resource management. Do you count arrows? Weight of treasure? Rations? How to keep track of all of these?
Thanks for your work, and game on!

Michael did talk a little about how he uses spreadsheets and calendars to keep track of the comings and goings of his campaign. But, I knew resource management would eventually come up. It's a good topic. One of those things GM's continue to wrestle with, tweak, and change over time. It's not just arrows and encumbrance, it's also trade, conscription, and the movement of armies. It's the ebb and flow of power between law and chaos as enemies are defeated or thwarted. What do you do with the vacuum created? How much minutia should a GM include? Tony Bath is certain to come up in this eventual pod cast.

I'm getting the hang of all that, glad you stuck with it. I'll add that topic to the list! With all the topics I have, both from suggestions and what I want to talk about, I have enough for about 2 years of episodes, at one every other week. Hope you'll subscribe and review the podcast!

Tony will come up more again for sure as I talk about incorporating mass combat and doing wargames within my campaign.

About resorces, and cash flow, i used to keep it simple, like "you spend X gp per week in food and stuff". it always worked, as my group werent the dungeon crawl for months kind of group

I have been enjoying the Wargames Campaigns podcasts in particular for the past few episodes...I'm working something similar at home, though it remains to be seen whether it will ever serve as the basis for an an RPG as well as a campaign.

Please, if I can help in future episodes, let me know what else you'd like to know about the campaign and world. Good luck! It's a little idiosyncratic, but I'm particularly interested in how you translate your troop strengths to the table, and, if you are using multiple rules sets, how you interface them.
